Developing cultural and literary awareness in the EFL upper primary classroom through the educative role of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Praca została podzielona na część teoretyczną oraz praktyczną. W pierwszej części dokonano przeglądu aktualnego stanu wiedzy glottodydaktycznej dotyczącego rozwijania świadomości kulturowej i literackiej w nauczaniu języka angielskiego oraz przedstawiono syntetycznie temat kulturo- i literaturoznawczy dotyczący Opowieści wigilijnej Charlesa Dickensa. W pierwszej części skupiono się na definicjach kultury i literatury oraz wyjaśniono ich pozytywny wpływ na naukę języków. Następnie opisano trzy elementy Opowieści wigilijnej, które są niezbędne do jej pełnego zrozumienia: kontekst społeczno-historyczny, życie Charlesa Dickensa oraz fabułę książki. W części praktycznej opisano sytuację dydaktyczną, profil klasy, wiek uczniów, poziom kompetencji językowej, tematy lekcji, materiały dydaktyczne oraz przedstawiono trzy scenariusze lekcji, które zawierają wnioski przed przeprowadzeniem zajęć i po.

The diploma project is divided into the theoretical and practical part. The first one reviews the current state of glottodidactic research regarding the development of cultural and literary awareness in the EFL classroom and presents the thematic area of cultural and literary studies regarding A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Firstly, this part concentrates on the definitions of culture as well as literature and explains their positive impact on language learning. Then, this thesis describes three components of A Christmas Carol that are crucial in order to fully understand it: the socio-historical context, Charles Dickens’s life and the plot of the book. The practical part describes the school environment, class profile, learners’ age, language level, topics, teaching materials and presents three lesson plans with pre-lesson and post-lesson reflections.
