Konflikt na rynku kapitałowym między inwestorami indywidualnymi a funduszami hedgingowymi i jego konsekwencje – analiza socjologiczna na przykładzie GameStop

dc.abstract.enThis paper discusses the events during the GameStop short squeeze in 2021. This year, there was a huge increase in GameStop shares price, caused by Reddit users who, working together, led to the collapse of a hedge fund. Based on comments from Wallstreetbets users collected from the Reddit platform, a sentiment analysis was conducted to explain the emotional motives of individual investors. The study showed that in addition to the desire to earn money, they were also guided by negative emotions towards funds and brokers, especially two companies, Robinhood and Melvin. No convincing evidence was found to conclude that investors were guided by ideological premises, such as a negative perception of capitalism. In turn, an analysis of the short squeeze from the perspective of conflict theory showed that class conflicts still exist and are occurring in new spaces such as the stock market. The paper also discusses the increase in the knowledge and skills of individual investors and the impact of technology on equalizing the opportunities in the conflict between hedge funds and investors.
dc.abstract.plPraca ta omawia wydarzenia podczas short squeezu na akcjach GameStop w 2021 roku. W tym roku bowiem doszło do ogromnego wzrostu na akcjach GameStop, wywołanego przez użytkowników Reddit, którzy współpracując, doprowadzili do upadku funduszu hedgingowego. Na podstawie komentarzy użytkowników Wallstreetbets zebranych z platformy Reddit, przeprowadzona została analiza sentymentu w celu wyjaśnienia emocjonalnych motywów działania inwestorów indywidualnych. Badanie pokazało, że oprócz chęci zarobku, kierowali się oni również negatywnymi emocjami wobec funduszy oraz brokerów, szczególnie wobec dwóch firm, Robinhood i Melvin. Nie znaleziono przekonujących dowodów, aby stwierdzić, że inwestorzy kierowali się ideologicznymi przesłankami, takimi jak negatywne postrzeganie kapitalizmu. Z kolei przeanalizowanie short squeeze z perspektywy teorii konfliktu pokazało, że konflikty klasowe nadal istnieją i dochodzi do nich na nowych przestrzeniach takich jak np. rynek akcji. W pracy omówiono również wzrost wiedzy i umiejętności inwestorów indywidualnych oraz wpływ technologii na wyrównanie szans w konflikcie między funduszami hedgingowymi a inwestorami.
