Young Adults’ Preferences for Psychotherapists: An Exploratory, Qualitative Analysis

dc.abstract.enMatching with a therapist can be based on all kinds of preferences like gender, age, religion or online reviews of the therapist. Previous research has suggested the idea that patient outcomes are affected by these preferences. However, the empirical data based on this topic is quite few and inconsistent with studies yielding conflicting results. In this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants with the aim to better understand their preferences for therapists’ choice and the role of these preferences in therapy. Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis was used in the study to construct the following themes: Finding the Perfect Match, The Cost of Care, Diversity and its Guidance and Unveiling the Essentials. The findings highlight the preferred demographic and psychological features of therapists which can be interpreted in light of similarity-attraction theory.
dc.abstract.plDopasowanie do terapeuty może opierać się na wszelkiego rodzaju preferencjach, takich jak płeć, wiek, religia lub recenzje terapeuty online. Wyniki wcześniejszych badań wskazywały na to, że preferencje pacjenta odnośnie do terapeuty mogą mieć znaczenie dla efektów terapii. Jednak danych empirycznych na ten temat jest dość mało, są one niespójne, a nawet w przypadku części badań sprzeczne. W tym badaniu jakościowym przeprowadzono częściowo ustrukturyzowane wywiady z sześcioma uczestnikami, w celu lepszego zrozumienia ich preferencji w wyborze terapeuty oraz rolę tych preferencji w terapii. Refleksyjna analiza tematyczna Braun i Clarke została wykorzystana do wyodrębnienia następujących tematów: W poszukiwaniu idealnego dopasowania, Koszt opieki, Różnorodność i jej wskazówki oraz Odkrywając to, co najważniejsze. Preferowane cechy demograficzne i psychologiczne terapeutów można interpretować m.in. w świetle teorii przyciągania się podobieństw.
