The Online Anonymity Controversy: Theoretical Considerations and Practical Implications for the InDialogue Platform

Uproszczony widok
The issue of anonymity during public consultations held with the use of IT tools requires urgent theoretical study as it has significant consequences in practice. The online anonymity controversy arises at the intersection of, on the one hand, concerns about the excessive emotionality and low quality of computer-mediated communication due to socio-psychological conditioning of human behavior in a deindividuated state (Zimbardo 1969), socio-linguistic conditioning of interpersonal communication in an environment (almost) deprived of non-verbal cues (see, e.g., Tanis and Postmes 2007) and the socio-psychological dynamics of group processes in cyberspace (see, e.g., Christopherson 2007); and on the other, far-reaching hopes for the liberating, empowering, and equalizing impact of the internet (see, e.g., Dubrovsky et al. 1991; Teich et al. 1999). In this chapter, we aim to map the online anonymity controversy within the scope of online public consultations. First, we discuss the practical solutions that have been already implemented by public consultation practitioners. Next, we identify key problem areas to which the designers of these solutions had to respond, and we locate these within the broader framework of theoretical considerations. Third, we present the solutions adopted for the inDialogue platform, linking them to the issues discussed.
