Pojęcie przedmiotu teoretycznego a spór o realizm w filozofii nauki

dc.abstract.enThe work presents an analysis of understanding and defining theoretical entities in a dispute over scientific realism. Its main aim is to present the definition of a theoretical entity reflecting the essence of this kind of objects and at the same time neutral for all kinds of positions in the debate. The secondary aim of the paper is to prove that proper definition of theoretical entity is necessary in debates over scientific realism. To make a legitimate claim about the existence of theoretical entities one should know what a theoretical entity really is. This dissertation discusses various understandings of the theoretical entities presented by the positions involved in the dispute: constructive empiricism, new experimentalism and semirealism. It also presents four main definitions of theoretical entity: basic definition, definition from unobservability, ontological definition and definition referring to the hypothetical entities. Those are definitions of theoretical entity which are most popular and accepted by some philosophers of science (both realists and antirealists). All these definitions contain significant defects, which lead to unacceptable conclusions. The author also offers an alternative definition: definition from explanation, which avoids defects of previous definitions. The following chapters show how various definitions work with arguments pro and con realism towards theoretical entities. Next chapters introduce history of such theoretical entities as: atom, ether and phlogiston. The author also considers how to explain that despite theory change some of theoretical terms still refer to something in independent reality.
dc.abstract.plPraca poświęcona jest analizie różnych sposobów rozumienia i definiowania przedmiotów teoretycznych w sporze o realizm. Jej głównym celem jest sformułowanie definicji przedmiotu teoretycznego oddającej istotę tego rodzaju przedmiotów a zarazem neutralnej dla różnych stanowisk w sporze między realistami a antyrealistami. Drugim celem pracy jest pokazanie, że stworzenie odpowiedniej definicji jest niezbędne w celu efektywniejszego prowadzenia dysput na temat realizmu naukowego. Należy bowiem wiedzieć, czym są przedmioty teoretyczne, by móc w uzasadniony sposób postulować bądź negować ich istnienie. W pracy omawiane są różne sposoby rozumienia przedmiotów teoretycznych przyjmowane przez filozofów biorących udział w sporze o realizm, reprezentujących konstruktywny empiryzm, nowy eksperymentalizm i semirealizm. Analizowane są także cztery najpopularniejsze definicje przedmiotu teoretycznego: definicja podstawowa, definicja ontologiczna, definicja z nieobserwowalności i definicja z hipotetyczności. Wskazywane są wady i niepożądane konsekwencje tych definicji. Następnie autorka proponuje nową definicję przedmiotu teoretycznego, nazwaną definicją z eksplanacji. Definicja ta pozwala uniknąć problemów, które wiążą się z wcześniejszymi definicjami. W kolejnych rozdziałach pracy pokazane jest, w jaki sposób różne definicje funkcjonują w argumentach na rzecz realizmu w stosunku do przedmiotów teoretycznych i przeciw temu stanowisku. Omówiony zostaje także problem tzw. przedmiotów transteoretycznych. Autorka przedstawia dzieje eteru i flogistonu, a następnie rozważa, czy terminy takie jak „eter” i „flogiston” rzeczywiście utraciły odniesienie przedmiotowe i pokazuje, jak można wytłumaczyć to, że mimo zmiany teorii naukowej termin teoretyczny nie traci swojego odniesienia przedmiotowego.
