Writing Men in the (m)Anthropocene: An Ecocritical Analysis of Masculinity in Contemporary Fiction

dc.abstract.enThe purpose of this thesis is to analyze the representations of masculinity through an ecocritical lens in selected works of American literature – Ursula Le Guin’s The Dispossessed, Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, and Jeff VanderMeer’s The Southern Reach Trilogy. Utilizing various theoretical concepts at the intersection of ecocriticism, feminism, ecofeminism, and masculinity studies, the author attempts to interpret how non-human nature and human characters are portrayed, seeking to identify connections between these portrayals in the context of gender and Western models of masculinity analyzed by critics such as Raewyn Connell, Martin Hultman, and Paul M. Pulé. Simultaneously, the author aims to find alternative models of masculinity in the analyzed texts.
dc.abstract.plCelem niniejszej pracy jest analiza męskości w ujęciu ekokrytycznym w wybranych tekstach literatury amerykańskiej – The Dispossessed Ursuli Le Guin, The Road Cormaca McCarthy’ego oraz trylogii Southern Reach Jeffa VanderMeera. Korzystając z różnych koncepcji teoretycznych z pogranicza ekokrytyki, feminizmu, ekofeminizmu oraz studiów nad męskością, autor podejmuje próbę odczytania sposobów przedstawiania pozaludzkiej przyrody oraz ludzkich bohaterów, starając się dostrzec powiązania pomiędzy tymi przedstawieniami w kontekście płci oraz zachodnich wzorców męskości analizowanych przez krytyków takich jak Raewyn Connell, Martin Hultman i Paul M. Pulé. Autor zarazem stara się odszukać w analizowanych tekstach alternatywne wzorce męskości, tak potrzebne w dobie kryzysu ekologicznego.
