Populism and Exclusion: How Experiences of Social Exclusion May Influence The Adoption of Populist Ideologies

dc.abstract.enThe study aims to understand how experiences of social exclusion may influence the adoption of populist ideologies. Through a comprehensive examination of various hypotheses, this research explores both direct effects and the mediating role of psychological mechanisms. Experiment manipulation inducing the feeling of exclusion used the Cyberball game paradigm. Hypotheses H1 through H4 explore the direct effects of social exclusion on key psychological variables, including relative deprivation, self-esteem, and the sense of control. Additionally, hypotheses H5 through H13 examine the mediating role of psychological mechanisms, such as increased relative deprivation, decreased self-esteem, decreased sense of control, and collective narcissism, in the relationship between social exclusion and populist ideology. The study identified a significant indirect effect of social exclusion on populist ideology through a reduced sense of control. Despite limitations in manipulation effectiveness, sample bias and self-reported measures, this research provides valuable insights into the psychological underpinnings of populism and social exclusion, offering groundwork for future studies and informing strategies for addressing the societal implications of populist movements.
dc.abstract.plCelem badania jest zrozumienie, w jaki sposób doświadczenia wykluczenia społecznego mogą wpływać na przyjęcie ideologii populistycznych. Poprzez wszechstronną analizę różnych hipotez, praca to bada zarówno skutki bezpośrednie, jak i pośredniczącą rolę mechanizmów psychologicznych. Manipulacja eksperymentem wywołująca poczucie wykluczenia wykorzystywała paradygmat gry Cyberball. Hipotezy od H1 do H4 badają bezpośredni wpływ wykluczenia społecznego na kluczowe zmienne psychologiczne, w tym deprywację relatywną, samoocenę i poczucie kontroli. Dodatkowo hipotezy od H5 do H13 badają mediacyjną rolę mechanizmów psychologicznych, takich jak zwiększona deprywacja relatywna, obniżona samoocena, obniżone poczucie kontroli i narcyzm zbiorowy, pomiędzy wykluczeniem społecznym a ideologią populistyczną. W badaniu zidentyfikowano istotny pośredni wpływ wykluczenia społecznego na ideologię populistyczną poprzez zmniejszenie poczucia kontroli. Pomimo ograniczeń w skuteczności manipulacji, obciążeniu próby i miar samoopisowych, praca ta dostarcza cennych informacji na temat psychologicznych podstaw populizmu i wykluczenia społecznego, oferując podstawy dla przyszłych badań i dostarczając informacji na temat strategii radzenia sobie ze społecznymi konsekwencjami ruchów populistycznych.
