dc.abstract.enGermanicus, though never a ruler, is present in later Romans' memory as if he had been one. Written sources (literary, including strictly historical, legal, epigraphic), archaeological material and numismatic evidence, show that – as the father, elder brother and grandfather of all the subsequent Julio-Claudian emperors – he was remembered chiefly as the embodiment of the dynastic principle
