A Comparative Analysis of Polish and German Translations with the Original English Text of Donna Tartt’s Novel The Secret History

dc.abstract.enThis thesis aims to analyze the translation of cultural elements in the Polish and German translations of the American novel The Secret History by Donna Tartt. The thesis consists of three chapters. The first two chapters are theoretical. The first chapter discusses theoretical aspects of translation, especially literary translation, such as the problem of translatability, translation strategies, the concepts of foreignization and domestication, and the issues of equivalence and cultural transfer. The second chapter presents the research material and its specificity, and discusses and compares classifications of cultural references and their translation strategies. The third chapter is a practical comparative analysis. Selected excerpts from the novel are divided into eight categories according to the culture-bound elements they contain. The translation techniques used by the translators and the adequacy of the translation in comparison with the original text of the novel are analyzed.
dc.abstract.plCelem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest analiza porównawcza przekładu elementów kulturowych w polskim i niemieckim tłumaczeniu amerykańskiej powieści autorstwa Donny Tartt „The Secret History”. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Dwa pierwsze rozdziały mają charakter teoretyczny. W rozdziale pierwszym omówiono teoretyczne aspekty tłumaczenia, w szczególności tłumaczenia literackiego, takie jak problem przekładalności, strategie tłumaczeniowe, pojęcia egzotyzacji i udomowienia oraz zagadnienia związane z ekwiwalencją i transferem kulturowym. W rozdziale drugim przedstawiono materiał źródłowy i jego specyfikę oraz omówiono i porównano klasyfikacje odniesień kulturowych oraz strategie ich tłumaczenia. Rozdział trzeci ma charakter praktycznej analizy porównawczej. Wybrane fragmenty powieści zostały podzielone na osiem kategorii w zależności od zawartych w nich elementów kulturowych. Analizie zostały poddane zastosowane techniki tłumaczeniowe oraz adekwatność tłumaczenia w porównaniu do oryginalnego tekstu powieści.
