(Un)translatability of Polish humour - based on an analysis of the English and French subtitles for the Netflix series 1670

dc.abstract.enThis paper analyses whether the Polish humour is translatable or not and how it is rendered in the French and English subtitles in the series “1670”. The first chapter introduces the reader to the plot of the series, as well as to the numerous cultural, linguistic and historical references of the story. Later, the phenomenon of the production in Poland and abroad is analysed. The second chapter is dedicated to audiovisual translation and its methodologies, paying special attention to the significance of subtitling, dubbing and voiceover. The third chapter covers the translation process consisting of translation strategies and techniques defined by various scholars. The theoretical part of the work concludes with a chapter on humour, its interpretation, and an attempt to define it in the French, English and Polish cultures. In the analytical part of the paper the translations of word games, proverbs, idioms, riddles and proper names appearing in the series are analysed, taking into account the theoretical issues discussed earlier. Each example is preceded by a brief introduction to the scene and includes a table with a comparison of subtitle translations. The work ends with conclusions drawn from the analysis.
dc.abstract.plW niniejszej pracy analizowany jest problem przetłumaczalności polskiego humoru na języki angielski oraz francuski na podstawie napisów do serialu 1670 wyprodukowanego przez Netflix. W pierwszym rozdziale pracy przybliżona jest fabuła serialu, a także zawarte w niej liczne odniesienia kulturowe, językowe i historyczne, a następnie omówiony jest fenomen produkcji w Polsce i zagranicą. W rozdziale drugim omówione są trzy rodzaje tłumaczeń audiowizualnych: dubbing, wersja lektorska i napisy, ich zalety oraz wyzwania, które stawiane są przed tłumaczami. Następnie przedstawione są strategie oraz techniki tłumaczeniowe. W kolejnym rozdziale dokonane jest porównanie polskiego, francuskiego, brytyjskiego i amerykańskiego poczucia humoru, a także wymienione są rodzaje żartów i strategie przyjęte w ich tłumaczeniu. W drugiej części pracy analizowane są tłumaczenia gier słownych, przysłów, idiomów, zagadek oraz nazw własnych występujących w serialu przy uwzględnieniu wcześniej omówionych zagadnień teoretycznych. Każdy przykład poprzedzony jest krótkim wprowadzeniem do sceny i zawiera tabelę z porównaniem tłumaczeń napisów. Pracę wieńczą wnioski wyciągnięte z analizy.
