dc.abstract.en | . |
dc.abstract.en | The study of monsters has attracted substantial scholarly attention and, consequently, a large body of work has been devoted to them, especially in the area of literary and cultural studies. The present investigation of Old and Middle English nouns denoting monsters involves an analysis of their incidence in mediaeval texts and degree of prototypicality. Also examined are collocational patterns and the differences between the terms referring to monsters in Old and Middle English as well as differences in a referential range between individual lexical items. The material for the analysis is derived from the Dictionary of Old English Corpus, the Innsbruck Corpus of Middle English Prose and the Corpus of Middle English Prose and Verse. The monograph consists of five chapters. Chapter One contains an overview of theoretical semantic approaches, a description of the approach and methodology adopted in the present study and a preliminary investigation of Mediaeval English nouns referring to monsters. Chapter Two discusses the role of monsters in culture and literature. Chapters Three, Four and Five present and interpret the data concerning words denoting monsters in Old and Middle English. Chapter Three deals with cover terms, lexemes which could refer to various types of monsters, Chapter Four investigates nouns for ‘reptilian monsters’ and Chapter Five examines nouns referring to humanoid monsters. |
