Initiation into Adulthood in E. M. Forster’s Maurice and The Longest Journey and Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited

dc.abstract.enThis thesis sets out to analyse the specific cross-genre between the Bildungsroman, university fiction, and queer literature that is to be witnessed in Maurice and The Longest Journey by E.M Forster as well as in Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh. It is argued that all three works present the reader with the figure of a young protagonist that sets off on a journey towards adulthood, during which the processes of maturation and identity-formation take place. In the first chapter, a theoretical outline of the key genres that both authors seem to implement in their novels is provided: the Bildungsroman, the university novel, and the queer novel. The second chapter is devoted to the analysis of how initiation into adulthood is depicted within the narratives, covering the period from late childhood up towards adolescence in each protagonist’s life. The third chapter focuses on identifying the recurrent themes and motifs that appear across all three novels as well as examining the ways in which the conflict between the young man and the society that surrounds him is depicted.
dc.abstract.plCelem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest analiza specyficznego gatunku literackiego, łączącego w sobie elementy Bildungsroman, powieści uniwersyteckiej i literatury queerowej, jaki można wyodrębnić w powieściach E.M. Forstera (“Maurycy”, “Najdłuższa podróż”) i Evelyna Waugh (“Powrót do Brideshead”). Pokazuję, że powieści te łączy ten sam typ protagonisty - jest to młody mężczyzna, który podejmuje podróż ku dorosłości. W trakcie podróży dochodzi w nim do zmian związanych z procesami dojrzewania i kreacji własnej tożsamości. W pierwszym rozdziale nakreślony został teoretyczny zarys gatunków wykorzystanych przez autorów do konstrukcji wymienionych powieści: bildungsroman, powieści uniwersyteckiej i powieści queerowej. Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest analizie sposobów przedstawienia w tych powieściach wątku inicjacji do dojrzałości zapoczątkowanej w okresie późnego dzieciństwa, a kończącej się we wczesnej młodości. Trzeci rozdział poświęcony jest wyodrębnieniu powtarzających się toposów i motywów łączących trzy wybrane powieści oraz pokazaniu, w jaki sposób przedstawiony jest w nich konflikt młodego człowieka z otaczającym go społeczeństwem.
