Analysis of Translation Strategies for Humour in the English- and Polish-language Versions of the Film Madagascar

dc.abstract.enThe paper is a comprehensive analysis of humor translation strategies used in the Polish language version of the animated film Madagascar, as translated by Bartosz Wierzbięta. The main thesis of the paper focuses on the challenges of translating humor in audiovisual texts, taking into account such aspects as cultural references, wordplay and situational comedy. A key objective is to analyze the methods of translating humor according to Chiaro, especially in the context of preserving the original comedic effect for a different linguistic and cultural audience. The theoretical part of the work discusses issues related to translation studies, audiovisual translation and humor theory, which form the basis for further analysis. The second part of the paper makes a detailed analysis of selected humorous elements in the Polish version of Madagascar, showing the use of specific translation strategies, such as adaptation, substitution and preservation of original jokes. It concludes with conclusions on the effectiveness of selected translation methods to maintain humor despite cultural differences.
dc.abstract.plPraca stanowi kompleksową analizę strategii przekładu humoru zastosowanych w polskiej wersji językowej filmu animowanego Madagaskar w tłumaczeniu Bartosza Wierzbięty. Teza koncentruje się na wyjątkowych wyzwaniach związanych z tłumaczeniem humoru w tekstach audiowizualnych, takich jak odniesienia kulturowe, gra słów i komizm sytuacyjny, przy jednoczesnym zachowaniu oryginalnego efektu komediowego dla innej publiczności językowej i kulturowej. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ocena zastosowanych metod tłumaczenia, przyglądając się metodom tłumaczenia humoru Chiaro. W części teoretycznej omówiono kluczowe pojęcia z zakresu przekładoznawstwa, technik tłumaczenia audiowizualnego i teorii humoru. Druga część pracy to część empiryczna, która przedstawia analizę tłumaczenia elementów humorystycznych z filmu. Na końcu pracy przedstawiono wnioski dotyczące skuteczności zastosowanych metod.
