Turkey's strategic importance in NATO for the Black Sea region

dc.abstract.enThis thesis explores the strategic relevance of the Black Sea, with a specific focus on its geopolitical importance, implications for energy security, and the historical context that has influenced its security dynamics. The Black Sea is of utmost importance for global security and energy transit, thereby attracting significant attention from NATO and other international entities. The thesis examines prominent measures implemented to guarantee peace in the region, including TRACECA, Operation Black Sea Harmony, BLACKSEAFOR, and the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC). These endeavors demonstrate the cooperative efforts to uphold peace in the face of escalating tensions, especially in light of Russia's expanding influence. Türkiye's significance inside NATO is underscored as a pivotal element in the alliance's strategy for the Black Sea region. The thesis examines Türkiye's military contributions, its strategic location as a bridge connecting Europe and Asia, and its participation in NATO's missile defense system. Furthermore, the text examines the difficulties and possibilities in the relationship between Türkiye and NATO, emphasizing the significance of Türkiye in the alliance's overarching strategy. The thesis also examines current security concerns in the Black Sea region, with a specific focus on the risks that Türkiye is experiencing. The document offers strategic suggestions for the future, highlighting the importance of a well-rounded strategy that combines military readiness with diplomatic initiatives to guarantee lasting security in the area. To summarize, the Black Sea is an important region of strategic significance, and Türkiye's participation within NATO will remain crucial in tackling the persistent security problems in the area.
