Co to znaczy "być szczęśliwym"?

This paper presents some ideas concerning a possible semantic description of Polish words szczęśliwy ‘happy’ and szczęście ‘happiness’. An assumption is made that in analyzing of these units, as well as analogical ones in other Slavonic languages, it may be useful to consider their etymology. The author points out that in the adequate representation of these meanings their relationships with the concepts ‘część’ (‘part’) and, respectively, ‘całość’ (‘whole’) should be taken into account. The generalization of the examined meaning, expressed in common language, would be as follows: szczęśliwy is one who knows that she / he is a part of a whole which goes beyond her / him.
