Argumenty brytyjskich elit przeciwko idei Home Rule dla Irlandii na początku XX wieku

dc.abstract.enThroughout the 19th and 20th centuries Irish society demanded from the British authorities for its own autonomy. This idea was called Home Rule. Within the United Kingdom itself, there were voices of opposition objections, saying, among other things, that the proposal was inefficient, uneconomic and immoral of the proposal. Among the many arguments from the British elite, coming mainly from Conservative party politicians and those associated with the party, the most numerous were on the issues of finance, land, self-government, religion, Ulster, and Irish nationalism. In the following paper, the author tries to determine why exactly these issues were at the heart of the arguments of opponents of the Home Rule, what their motivations were, and looks for points of common ground between them common points. In addition, he also focuses on the very figures who shaped public opinion in the United Kingdom at the time. The text includes such names as Arthur James Balfour, Edward Carson and Andrew Bonar Law. The work is designed to give researchers of Irish and British history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries a profile of the opponents of Irish autonomy.
dc.abstract.plW XIX i XX wieku irlandzkie społeczeństwo w różnym stopniu domagało się od władz Wielkiej Brytanii własnej autonomii. Ideę tę zwano Home Rule (Rządy Krajowe). W samym Zjednoczonym Królestwie pojawiały się głosy sprzeciwu, mówiące m.in. o nieefektywności, nieopłacalności i niemoralności tejże propozycji. Spośród wielu argumentów brytyjskiej elity, pochodzących głównie ze strony polityków partii konserwatywnej i osób z nią związanych, najliczniejsze dotyczyły kwestii: finansów, ziemi, samorządności, religii, Ulsteru oraz irlandzkiego nacjonalizmu. Autor w poniższej pracy stara się określić dlaczego akurat te sprawy stanowiły sedno argumentacji oponentów Home Rule, jakie były ich motywacje, a także poszukuje między nimi punktów wspólnych. Ponadto skupia się również na samych postaciach, które kształtowały wówczas opinię publiczną w Zjednoczonym Królestwie. W tekście pojawiają się takie nazwiska jak: Arthur James Balfour, Edward Carson czy Andrew Bonar Law. Praca ma za zadanie przybliżyć badaczom historii Irlandii i Wielkiej Brytanii przełomu XIX i XX wieku profil przeciwnika irlandzkiej autonomii.
