Blended learning of languages in formal and informal contexts among Polish learners

The chapter presents a variety of approaches to blended language learning in Poland. It starts with examples which illustrate how languages are taught within this scheme at tertiary education. Then, it elaborates approaches to blended learning at primary and secondary levels, where blended learning most often means participation in eTwinning collaborative projects. Subsequently, it unfolds the idea of informal language learning as autonomous activity of learners who blend F2F learning in class with own online activities in foreign languages out⁃of⁃class. The results of two studies help to identify the level and areas of informal blended learning. The first study reveals that secondary school learners use foreign languages online to communicate, to participate in foreign culture, to learn languages, to search for information which is not available in the native language, and to have fun. The second study demonstrates how secondary school learners and students of linguistics blend language learning strategies with online activities in foreign languages. The final section refers to a new potential of MOOCs for blending language learning in a monolingual country. The chapter concludes with research⁃based recommendations for teachers who might want to model and guide out⁃of⁃class learning activities and encourage learners to blend learning on their own and thus complement their, at times limited by a range of factors, formal language practice
