Conceptual mechanisms employed for producing humorous effects in the Derry Girls TV show. A cognitive linguistic analysis of selected examples

dc.abstract.enThis thesis is a cognitive linguistic analysis of selected examples of humorous effects in the Derry Girls TV show, created via the conceptual mechanisms of metaphor and metonymy. The paper is divided into two sections: theoretical and analytical. The theoretical section provides an overview of the nature of meaning in language, along with an explanation of the traditional approach to metaphor and metonymy. This part also examines the more recent, conceptual understanding of metaphor and metonymy, as proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). Additionally, the theoretical introduction outlines Raskin's Script-Based Semantic Theory of Humor (1985). The analytical section demonstrates the application of these conceptual mechanisms in the process of generating humor. A conclusion can be drawn from this thesis that conceptual mechanisms of metaphor and metonymy play a significant role in creating humor, as these phenomena are a natural aspect of interpersonal communication. Thus, metaphor and metonymy are indispensable tools in allowing language users to amuse their interlocutors.
dc.abstract.plPoniższa praca jest kognitywno-lingwistyczną analizą wybranych przykładów tworzenia efektów humorystycznych poprzez zastosowanie mechanizmów metafory i metonimii pojęciowej w serialu komediowym Derry Girls. Praca składa się z dwóch części, teoretycznej i analitycznej. Część teoretyczna zawiera krótką dyskusję na temat rozumienia istoty znaczenia w języku, a także wyjaśnienie założeń tradycyjnego podejścia do zjawisk metafory i metonimii. Część ta omawia również nowe, konceptualne rozumienie tych zjawisk zgodnie z teorią zaproponowaną m. in. przez Lakoffa i Johnsona (1980) oraz teorię humoru opartą na semantycznej teorii humoru (Script-Based Semantic Theory of Humor), zaproponowanej przez Raskina (1985). Część analityczna ma na celu ukazanie zastosowania wyżej wspomnianych mechanizmów pojęciowych w celu tworzenia efektów humorystycznych. Wnioski wyciągnięte z tej pracy mogą sugerować, że mechanizmy pojęciowe aktywnie przyczyniają się w generowaniu humoru, ponieważ stanowią naturalny środek komunikacji międzyludzkiej, co sprawia, że użytkownicy języka z łatwością sięgają po nie w celu rozbawienia ich rozmówcy.
