Do pomiaru świadomości interoceptywnej zastosowano Wielowymiarowy Kwestionariusz Świadomości Interoceptywnej (Mehling i in., 2012, 2018), w prowadzonych badaniach bazowano na polskiej adaptacji narzędzia (Brytek-Matera & Kozieł, 2015).

The aim of this dissertation was to examine the complex, multidimensional relationship between interoceptive awareness—operationalized as a set of beliefs regarding the perception of bodily sensations and the body's regulatory role—and the perception and experience of emotion, as well as the evaluation of affectively stimulating stimuli. The examined relationships were intended to illustrate the course of an emotional reaction. A total of six studies were conducted, using both correlational and experimental designs. The Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (Mehling et al., 2012, 2018) was used to measure interoceptive awareness. The conducted studies were based on the Polish adaptation of the tool (Brytek-Matera & Kozieł, 2015). Additionally, one study included physiological indicators based on heart rate variability (HRV). HRV indicators, which can be interpreted as measures of arousal, were compared with self-report measures of participants' subjective states and the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness. Regarding emotion, the focus was primarily on two aspects: the evaluation of affectively stimulating stimuli, and the feeling and perception of experienced emotions. The evaluation of stimuli and emotions was based on the concept of core affect (Barrett et al., 2007; Russell, 1980). Participants provided self-report ratings on multidimensional scales. Based on the conducted studies, it can be concluded that the relationship between the evaluation of affectively stimulating stimuli and the self-reported level of interoceptive awareness remains rather limited. In the case of the valence dimension, a weak relationship was observed, which is moderated by the type of stimulus. It was also noted that an increase in some components of interoceptive awareness is accompanied by an increase in the perceived arousal level of affective stimuli, meaning these stimuli are perceived as more arousing. Similarly to the dimensions of valence and arousal, the relationship with the dimension of origin can also be described as insignificant—with an increase in the values on some scales, the evaluated stimuli are perceived as eliciting more spontaneous than reflective reactions. At the same time, it was demonstrated that interoceptive awareness is significantly related to the experience of emotion, and this relationship is multidimensional, concerning not only the intensity of emotion but also the evaluation of the emotional state in terms of valence, arousal, origin, and dominance. This pattern was confirmed in several studies, with the observed relationships primarily concerning the Self-Regulation and Body Trust scales. An increase in selected components of interoceptive awareness was associated with a decrease in various types of negative emotions and an increase in positive emotions. In one of the studies, the Body Trust scale was also a significant predictor of the perceived negativity, positivity, and controllability (dominance) of the experienced emotional state. Similar relationships were also found in path analysis, where both Self-Regulation and Body Trust were significant predictors of all types of emotion. Based on these results, it can be concluded that interoceptive awareness significantly influences emotion regulation (e.g., Lobel, Granic, & Engels, 2014), which in turn translates to psychological well-being (Hanley, Mehling, & Garland, 2017).
