“The Tracks of a Translation.” A Comparative Analysis of Julian Tuwim’s “Lokomotywa” in English and Russian translations

dc.abstract.en	This thesis analyses Julian Tuwim's poem Locomotive and its translation into English by Walter Whipple and into Russian by Emma Moshkovskaya. The theoretical basis of the thesis is provided by translation strategies and techniques by Eugene Nida, Lawrence Venuti, Rita Ottinen and Monika Adamczyk-Grabowska's model of translation criticism. This thesis defines the subject matter of children's literature, introduces the concept of (in)visibility of the translator, describes the functions of children's literature and points out potential translation challenges arising from these functions. The analysis of translations compares strategies for translating wordplay, onomatopoeic expressions, repetition, rhythm and rhyme. The thesis is structured in three chapters: a biography of Tuwim and the cultural context of the poem, literature on translation theory of children's literature, and a comparative analysis of the translations. The conclusions indicate that the translations differ in their approach: the English translation attempts to preserve the structure and rhythm of the original by introducing cultural substitutes, while the Russian translation adapts the structure of the text to the cultural and linguistic context of the target culture without prioritising total fidelity to the original. Both translations demonstrate the complexity and multifaceted nature of the process of translating children's literature while emphasising the importance of cultural context in translation.

Teoretyczną podstawę pracy stanowią strategie i techniki tłumaczeniowe autorstwa Eugene'a Nidy, Lawrence'a Venutiego, Rity Ottinen oraz model krytyki przekładu Moniki Adamczyk-Grabowskiej. Niniejsza praca definiuje problematyk e literatury dziecięcej, wprowadza pojęcie '(nie)widzialności tłumacza', opisuje funkcje literatury dziecięcej oraz wskazuje na potencjalne wyzwania tłumaczeniowe wynikające z tych funkcji. Analiza przekładów porównuje strategie tłumaczenia gier słów, wyrażeń onomatopeicznych, powtórzeń, rytmu oraz rymów. Struktura pracy obejmuje trzy rozdziały: biografia Tuwima i kontekst kulturowy wiersza, literatura przedmiotu dotycząca teorii tłumaczenia literatury dziecięcej oraz analiza porównawcza przekładów. Wnioski wskazują, że przekłady różnią się podejściem: angielski przekład stara się zachować strukturę i rytm oryginału, wprowadzając kulturalne substytuty, natomiast rosyjski adaptuje strukturę tekstu do kontekstu kulturowego i językowego kultury docelowej, nie nadając priorytetu całkowitej wierności oryginałowi. Oba tłumaczenia ukazują złożoność i wieloaspektowość procesu tłumaczenia literatury dziecięcej, podkreślając jednocześnie wagę kontekstu kulturowego w przekładzie.
