Using visual aids in teaching vocabulary to EFL learners at the lower primary level

dc.abstract.en	The visuals are the most commonly used aids in the English classes, even though the methodology of language teaching evolves constantly. This bachelor thesis explores the role and effectiveness of using visual aids in teaching English vocabulary to EFL students at lower primary level. The first chapter defines who the lower primary students are. The paper discusses how the vocabulary must be chosen to be appropriate for the students, explaining what must be taken into consideration when choosing it. The paper explains the nature of learning and teaching vocabulary, highlighting the role of the teacher in the process of teaching lexis to young learners. The thesis then explores the visual aids, explaining their role and nature. Various visual aids are listed with the explanation on how they work and in what way can they be implemented into the English lesson. The second chapter describes the author's personal experience and observation in the Polish elementary school. The experience and observations include the methodology and the school environment. The practical chapter explains the didactic gap, that being the underusage of the visual aids during the EFL classes, while also providing potential solutions to this issue. The chapter also includes the author's observations after implementing selected visual aids into the English lessons and how they affect the process of teaching. The thesis demonstrates that visual aids not only support comprehension and memory work, but also engage the students in the lesson more.
dc.abstract.pl	Materiały wizualne są najczęściej używanymi pomocami na zajęciach z języka angielskiego, mimo że metodologia nauczania języków obcych nieustannie ewoluuje. Niniejsza praca licencjacka bada rolę i skuteczność stosowania pomocy wizualnych w nauczaniu słownictwa angielskiego uczniów EFL na niższym poziomie podstawowym. Pierwszy rozdział definiuje, kim są uczniowie niższych klas szkoły podstawowej. Praca omawia, w jaki sposób należy dobrać słownictwo, aby było odpowiednie dla uczniów, wyjaśniając, co należy wziąć pod uwagę przy jego wyborze. Praca wyjaśnia istotę uczenia się i nauczania słownictwa, podkreślając rolę nauczyciela w procesie nauczania leksyki młodych uczniów. Następnie praca bada pomoce wizualne, wyjaśniając ich rolę i naturę. Różne pomoce wizualne są wymienione wraz z wyjaśnieniem, jak działają i w jaki sposób można je wdrożyć do lekcji języka angielskiego. Drugi rozdział opisuje osobiste doświadczenia i obserwacje autora w polskiej szkole podstawowej. Doświadczenia i obserwacje obejmują metodologię i środowisko szkolne. Rozdział praktyczny wyjaśnia lukę dydaktyczną, czyli niedostateczne wykorzystanie pomocy wizualnych podczas zajęć EFL, a także przedstawia potencjalne rozwiązania tego problemu. Rozdział zawiera również obserwacje autora po wprowadzeniu wybranych pomocy wizualnych do lekcji języka angielskiego i ich wpływ na proces nauczania. Praca pokazuje, że pomoce wizualne nie tylko wspomagają rozumienie i pracę pamięciową, ale także bardziej angażują uczniów w lekcję.
