The role of Multilateral Development Banks in the promotion of sustainable development in selected Sub-Saharan African states. The case study of Ghana and Kenya

dc.abstract.en	This study introduces and evaluates the input of two multilateral development banks (MDBs) – the World Bank and the African Development Bank - in the promotion of sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa. The research is focused on the activities of the banks in two sub-Saharan states, Ghana and Kenya, to enable the delivery of more specific conclusions. The paper presents the analysis of methods that the World Bank and the African Development Bank use to contribute to the improvement of the most challenging development sectors in both states. It is found that Multilateral Development Banks have a pivotal role in multilateral development assistance in the region and that their role in filling the Sustainable Development Goals investment gap is underestimated. It can be concluded that although not every investment program financed by both institutions is meeting all of its established targets, the projects in question have generally delivered satisfactory outcomes and had an impact on improvements in the majority of the most challenging development areas in Ghana and Kenya.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsze badanie wprowadza i ocenia wkład dwóch wielostronnych banków rozwoju – Banku Światowego i Afrykańskiego Banku Rozwoju – w promowanie zrównoważonego rozwoju w Afryce Subsaharyjskiej. Badania koncentrują się na działalności tych banków w dwóch państwach subsaharyjskich, Ghanie i Kenii, aby umożliwić wyciągnięcie bardziej szczegółowych wniosków. W pracy przedstawiono analizę metod, które Bank Światowy i Afrykański Bank Rozwoju stosują, aby przyczynić się do poprawy najbardziej wymagających sektorów rozwojowych w obu krajach. Ustalono, że wielostronne banki rozwoju odgrywają kluczową rolę w wielostronnej pomocy rozwojowej w regionie, a ich rola w wypełnianiu luki inwestycyjnej w zakresie Celów Zrównoważonego Rozwoju jest niedoceniana. Można stwierdzić, że choć nie każdy program inwestycyjny finansowany przez obie instytucje osiąga wszystkie swoje założone cele, omawiane projekty ogólnie przyniosły zadowalające wyniki i miały wpływ na poprawę w większości najbardziej wymagających obszarów rozwojowych w Ghanie i Kenii.
