The Evolution of Dubbing in Polish Animated Cinema: a Comparative Analysis of the Translations of “Shrek” (2001) and “Kung Fu Panda” (2024)

dc.abstract.en	The aim of this thesis is to analyze the evolution of dubbing in the Polish animated film industry, with particular emphasis on the translation of humor, wordplay, and cultural references. The subject of the study consists of two American animated films – 'Shrek' (2001) and 'Kung Fu Panda 4' (2024), which – despite being released more than two decades apart – were translated by the same translator, Bartosz Wierzbięta. The analysis is based on qualitative data and is comparative in nature. The study takes into account both Polish and Anglo-Saxon cultural contexts and is grounded in the theories of scholars such as Lawrence Venuti (domestication and foreignization strategies), Delabastita (translation of wordplay), Martínez-Sierra (typology of humor), as well as Chiaro, Zabalbeascoa, and Belczyk (strategies for translating humor and cultural references). The analysis of selected dialogue excerpts demonstrates how translation strategies have evolved and whether newer approaches are more effective or appealing to contemporary audiences. The issues discussed include the history and development of dubbing in Poland, technical aspects of synchronization, and challenges arising from the translation of linguistic and cultural elements. The thesis argues that successful dubbing requires not only appropriate linguistic translation but also a deep understanding of cultural context and creative translation skills.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza ewolucji dubbingu w polskim przemyśle filmów animowanych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem technik tłumaczenia humoru, gier słownych oraz odniesień kulturowych. Przedmiotem badań są dwa amerykańskie filmy animowane – 'Shrek' (2001) oraz 'Kung Fu Panda 4' (2024), które – mimo ponad dwóch dekad różnicy – zostały przetłumaczone przez tego samego tłumacza, Bartosza Wierzbiętę. Analiza opiera się na danych jakościowych i ma charakter porównawczy. Badanie uwzględnia kontekst kulturowy polski i anglosaski oraz opiera się na teoriach takich autorów jak Venuti (strategie udomowienia i egzotyzacji), Delabastita (tłumaczenie gier słownych), Martínez-Sierra (typologia humoru), Chiaro, Zabalbeascoa i Belczyk (strategie tłumaczenia humoru oraz odniesień kulturowych). Analiza wybranych fragmentów dialogów ukazuje, w jaki sposób strategie tłumaczeniowe ewoluowały, oraz bada czy nowsze rozwiązania są bardziej efektywne lub atrakcyjne dla współczesnych odbiorców. Poruszane zagadnienia obejmują historię i rozwój dubbingu w Polsce, techniczne aspekty synchronizacji, a także wyzwania wynikające z tłumaczenia elementów językowych i kulturowych. Praca dowodzi, że skuteczny dubbing wymaga nie tylko odpowiedniego przekładu językowego, ale także głębokiej znajomości kontekstu kulturowego oraz kreatywności translatorskiej.
