Pokolenie JP2 czy pokolenie RiGCz-u? Antykult Jana Pawła II w oczach trzech pokoleń
| dc.abstract.en | The study analyzes the phenomenon of the contemporary reception of John Paul II in Poland, focusing on two opposing socio-cultural trends: the cult and the anti-cult of the Polish pope. The author demonstrates how, on the one hand, Karol Wojtyła became a national hero, spiritual leader, and symbol of Polish religiosity, while on the other hand, he became a subject of criticism, irony, and internet-based deconstruction, particularly among younger generations. The aim of the research was to understand the causes behind the emergence and spread of the anti-cult of John Paul II, including memes, satirical names, and iconoclastic content that undermined his authority. The study is based on an analysis of secondary data (memes, statements by the author of a meme-dedicated website about John Paul II) and six focus group interviews representing three age categories and differing religious beliefs. Theoretical concepts were drawn from the works of Stefan Czarnowski (national hero), Pierre Bourdieu (symbolic violence), and René Girard (scapegoat) to capture the symbolic and sociological dynamics of the phenomenon. The findings reveal a strong generational divide in perceptions of the pope. For older generations, he remains a saintly figure; for younger ones, he is a historical figure often associated with an excessive cult, which in turn provoked a backlash. The anti-cult is interpreted as a form of rebellion against the symbolic violence of the Catholic Church, with memes serving as a tool of desacralization and critical distancing. The study suggests that the anti-cult not only contributes to the emergence of a new narrative about John Paul II but also reflects broader transformations in religiosity, national identity, and the role of authority in contemporary Polish society. |
Pojęcia teoretyczne zaczerpnięto z dzieł Stefana Czarnowskiego (bohater narodowy), Pierre’a Bourdieu (przemoc symboliczna) i René Girarda (kozioł ofiarny), aby uchwycić dynamikę symboliczną i socjologiczną badanego zjawiska. |
