University students' perceptions of the influence of studying abroad on foreign language speaking anxiety

There is an increasing amount of research concerning foreign language anxiety (FLA) in different learning contexts including studying abroad (SA) (Zhang & Tan, 2024, p. 1). FLA tends to decrease after SA (Klassen & Marx, 2020; Çınar & Altay, 2025). However, there is no published research on studying abroad and foreign language anxiety among Polish students. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between study abroad experiences and university students’ foreign language speaking anxiety. Specifically, it was intended to establish correlations between students’ activities, habits and social contacts during SA and their FL speaking anxiety. Moreover, the study aimed to investigate whether university students who studied abroad felt that their speaking skills had improved and potential factors that led to it. The current study combines qualitative and quantitative data. Participants were university students from Poland who had studied abroad. They answered the questionnaire involving adapted version of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) (Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope, 1985) and Language Contact Profile (LCP) (Freed, Dewey, Segalowitz & Halter, 2004). Foreign language anxiety scale identified students with different levels of FL speaking anxiety before and after studying abroad, while LCP provided information on how much time participants spent on interaction with different speaker groups, functional purposes of foreign language, exposure to input and writing as well as the use of Polish while studying abroad. Participants also had an opportunity to answer open-ended questions and indicate the reasons why they believed their speaking skills improved, remained the same or decreased. Generally, both quantitative and qualitative research is needed in order to fully understand the influence of social networks (Borras & Llanes, 2019, p. 16). Additionally, Saito and Iida, who researched speaking anxiety, point out that qualitative research is required, because of this issue’s complex nature (Saito & Iida, 2015, p. 2). Analysis revealed that FLA generally decreased due to improved proficiency, greater exposure and the development of social connections. Participants who reported progress in speaking attributed it primarily to immersion and real-life language use, followed by regular speaking practice, social interaction, rapport‑building and increased confidence as well as fluency. Some participants also highlighted the necessity of using the language in academic or professional settings. A smaller group of respondents indicated that their speaking abilities had not changed, while one participant reported a decline, attributing it to insufficient contact with local students. Answers to the research questions led to teaching implications on how the findings can be used in real educational settings. Teachers can support learners before, while and after they study abroad.
