dc.abstract.en	The present study aims to analyze the use of the charter by the cathedral clergy in the Polish lands up to the mid-fourteenth century. Previous research has focused mainly on the creation of legal records within chancery practices, while marginalizing the subsequent stages in the “life” of the medieval document—its preservation and using. Although the evidentiary function of charters has long attracted the attention of historians, their role in the construction of collective memory and in the broader growing of literacy has not been sufficiently elucidated. From its inception, the document operated not merely as a written attestation of property rights to be produced in litigation, but also as a medium of remembrance and a repository of knowledge about past events. Around the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, one can observe—an aspect thus far largely neglected in historiography—the nascent formation of cathedral institutional archives. These are best understood not as autonomous entities in the modern sense, but rather as ensembles of practices concerned with the custody, selection, and systematic arrangement of accumulated written material. The material traces of such efforts, most visibly in the form of dorsal notes, attest to the considerable organizational energy invested by cathedral clerics. They simultaneously reveal both the growing indispensability of written records in the conduct of current affairs and the emergence of a mentality increasingly shaped by the authority of the written word. The document was thus far from being a mere “scrap of parchment sequestered in a treasury.” Instead, it functioned as a persistent witness to the past within the life of the ecclesiastical community and as an instrument actively employed in strategies of memory. To integrate the study of documents and of pragmatic literacy into the field of memory studies is to open new avenues for understanding the transformations of medieval writing culture and the processes through which the mental horizons of cathedral communities in the Polish lands were formed during this pivotal period.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca ma na celu analizę użytkowania dokumentu przez kler katedralny na ziemiach polskich do połowy XIV wieku. Dotychczasowe badania skupiały się głównie na zagadnieniach powstawania świadectw prawnych w ramach prac kancelaryjnych, marginalizując jednak dalsze etapy „życia” średniowiecznego dokumentu – jego przechowywanie i użytkowanie. Wprawdzie interesowały historyków funkcje dokumentu jako środka dowodowego, niedostatecznie jednak uchwycono jego rolę w procesach kształtowania pamięci zbiorowej oraz w rozwoju kultury pisma. Dokument od początku służył nie tylko jako pisemne świadectwo własności, które można było okazywać w razie sporów, lecz także jako nośnik pamięci i źródło wiedzy o przeszłych wydarzeniach. Na przełomie XIII i XIV w. miał miejsce, dotychczas zupełnie niezauważony w historiografii, początek procesu kształtowania się katedralnych archiwów instytucjonalnych, które rozumieć należy nie jako odrębne byty instytucjonalny, lecz jako pewien zespół praktyk związanych z przechowywaniem, selekcją i opracowywaniem zgromadzonego materiału. Widoczne efekty porządkowania zbiorów dokumentów w postaci not dorsalnych wskazują na wielki wysiłek organizacyjny, podjęty przez kler katedralny. Zjawiska te dowodzą konieczności szerokiego wykorzystania świadectw pisanych w bieżących działaniach oraz rozwoju mentalności opartej na słowie pisanym. Dokument nie był zatem „zamkniętym w skarbcu skrawkiem pergaminu”, lecz nieustannie obecnym w życiu wspólnoty świadectwem przeszłości i wykorzystywanym przez nią elementem strategii pamięci. Włączenie problematyki dokumentu oraz piśmienności pragmatycznej do badań nad pamięcią otwiera nowe możliwości zrozumienia przemian średniowiecznej kultury pisma i procesów formowania się mentalności wspólnot katedralnych na ziemiach polskich w omawianym okresie.
