Samopoznanie między filozofią a rytuałem. Teurgia jako praktyka duchowa w neoplatonizmie
Samopoznanie między filozofią a rytuałem. Teurgia jako praktyka duchowa w neoplatonizmie
| dc.abstract.en | The thesis analyzes the evolution of the concept of self-knowledge in Neoplatonism, transitioning from Plotinus's purely intellectual therapy of the soul to the ritual practice of Iamblichus's theurgy. The main argument is that theurgy was not a departure from philosophy, but its soteriological and ritual completion, emerging in response to the insufficiency of human reason in the pursuit of divine union. Plotinus considered self-knowledge a purely intellectual process involving contemplation (theōria) and the gradual purification of the soul from material influences, which was meant to lead to union with the One in a state of ecstasy (ekstasis). A key shift was introduced by Iamblichus, who argued that the soul descends entirely into the body, rendering it helpless and incapable of returning to the divine on its own. According to Iamblichus, contemplation alone was insufficient, and divine intervention was necessary, which manifested through theurgy, a practice he defined as a divine work (theourgia). In theurgy, a key role was played by symbols (synthēmata) - material ones like stones and herbs, and verbal ones in the form of unspeakable names. These symbols were intended to serve as carriers of divine power and enable union (henōsis), which was a process of ontological transformation, not merely the acquisition of knowledge. Proclus, synthesizing the ideas of Plotinus and Iamblichus, combined contemplation with theurgy, creating a complete system where self-knowledge was both the beginning and the goal of philosophy. He believed that a true philosopher must also be a theurgist, using philosophy to understand the structure of being and theurgy to practically achieve union. The legacy of theurgy endured, and its concepts were rediscovered in the Renaissance by thinkers like Marsilio Ficino, forming the basis for Hermetic philosophy. |
| dc.abstract.pl | Praca analizuje ewolucję pojęcia samopoznania w neoplatonizmie, przechodząc od czysto intelektualnej terapii duszy u Plotyna do rytualnej praktyki teurgicznej Jamblicha. |
