Analysis of the English subtitled version of the Polish film “Teściowie 1”

dc.abstract.en	This bachelor's thesis presents an analysis of the English subtitles for the Polish black comedy Teściowie 1 (2021) based on selected examples. The research's main objective is to examine how Polish cultural elements are rendered for an English-speaking audience. The study also aims to investigate which translation strategies are employed when transferring Polish cultural references into English. The study is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. Chapter one presents the theory of translation, with particular emphasis on equivalence, Newmark's methods and techniques, and Venuti's strategies (foreignization and domestication). Chapter two covers audiovisual translation, focusing on subtitles and the constraints involved in their creation. Additionally, the translation of the linguistic elements analysed in this study is discussed, together with the difficulties that may arise during their translation. The practical part focuses on the analysis of the translation of selected linguistic issues. These are: proper names, dialect, culture-specific humour, taboo language, and idioms with proverbs.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca dotyczy analizy angielskich napisów do polskiej czarnej komedii „Teściowie 1” (2021) na podstawie wybranych przykładów. Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie, w jaki sposób polskie elementy kulturowe są przedstawiane odbiorcom anglojęzycznym. Ponadto badanie ma na celu przeanalizowanie, jakie strategie tłumaczeniowe są stosowane przy przenoszeniu polskich odniesień kulturowych na język angielski. Praca podzielona jest na dwie części – teoretyczną oraz praktyczną. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia teorię przekładu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ekwiwalencji, metod i technik tłumaczeniowych Newmarka oraz strategii Venutiego (egzotyzacja i udomowienie). Rozdział drugi dotyczy tłumaczenia audiowizualnego, z naciskiem na napisy i ograniczenia podczas ich tworzenia. Następnie omówiono tłumaczenie elementów językowych analizowanych w niniejszej pracy oraz trudności mogące wystąpić podczas ich przekładu. Część praktyczna skupia się na analizie tłumaczenia wybranych zagadnień językowych. Są to: nazwy własne, dialekt, humor o podłożu kulturowym, język tabu i idiomy z przysłowiami.
