Korea-Japan post-World War II reconciliation process

dc.abstract.en	This study analyses the reconciliation process between Korea and Japan after World War II and proposes the direction the two countries should take in the future. Although Korea and Japan have normalized diplomatic relations and attempted reconciliation in the political world, it is believed that true reconciliation has not been realized. Therefore, this study focuses on the cases of Poland and Germany, which have experienced similar conflicts. Poland was invaded by Germany during World War II, and even after the war, it experienced continuous friction with Germany, including territorial disputes. However, they have taken the process of national reconciliation led by the religious communities. They are now cooperating closely within the EU community. Of course, there are limitations in Korea-Japan case that does not completely match with the German and Polish cases, such as the absence of a heartfelt apology like Germany, the maximization of national sentiment in both countries, and changes in the international situation. Despite of these limitations, this study has been able to derive meaningful methods of attempting reconciliation, such as civil society activities, cooperation based on common political interests, network formation through the United Nations, exchanges between local organizations, youth exchanges, and the formation of a correct view of history through the publication of joint textbooks. Through this study, it is expected that South Korea and Japan, like Poland and Germany, will be able to wash away the pain of the past and establish themselves as each other's strongest partners through healthy reconciliation.
