South Korea’s policy towards Japan under the governments of Yoon Suk-yeol and Moon Jae

dc.abstract.en	South Korea and Japan share a complex history that continues to shape their diplomatic relations. From the Japanese colonial era to modern-day disputes, unresolved historical issues such as forced labor, military sexual slavery, and the Dokdo/Takeshima territorial conflict remain central to their interactions. This thesis examines South Korea's policy toward Japan under the contrasting administrations of Moon Jae-in and Yoon Suk-yeol, with a focus on their differing approaches to addressing these challenges. The Moon Jae-in administration adopted a history-oriented strategy, emphasizing Japan's accountability for past atrocities and seeking tangible reparations and apologies. This approach often resulted in heightened tensions, including economic and diplomatic conflicts, as well as strong public support for historical justice. Conversely, the Yoon Suk-yeol administration shifted its focus toward a future-oriented agenda, aiming to restore cooperative ties with Japan through reconciliation and economic collaboration. This policy reflected a pragmatic approach to enhancing bilateral relations but faced criticism for sidelining historical grievances.
