Ghouls and Wraiths: the Influence of Horror on the Process of Worldbuilding in Fantasy Literature Exemplified with J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Andrzej Sapkowski’s the Witcher Saga

dc.abstract.en	The thesis is about the impact of horror on fantasy worlds and how authors use it to enrich their works. Horror, which has been present in our culture for centuries, has been used not only to add the elements of fright, but also to create suspense, make the stories less linear or provide commentary about certain topics. All of these are especially prevalent on the pages of fantasy books, in which authors put heroes in supernatural - compared to real life - situations. However, depending on the book or even subgenre, the usage and the effect may differ significantly. On the one hand, J. R. R. Tolkien, whom many people credit modern fantasy to, used horror to mainly make the stakes even higher and give readers a feeling that the world is more sinister than they may have originally thought. On the other hand, Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of The Witcher saga, does not attempt to make horror elements less terrifying than they should be. His works are full of raw descriptions, which are fully grounded in the world that he created. Although both authors use horror differently, there are some aspects that are similar, such as purposefully using revolting descriptions, which serve mainly to disgust the readers. After consideration, it can be stated that horror does influence the reception of books and even allows the readers to better immerse themselves.
dc.abstract.pl	Praca jest o wpływie horroru na światy fantasy i jak autorzy używają go by wzbogacić ich dzieła. Horror, który był obecny w naszej kulturze od wielu wieków, jest używany nie tylko by dodać elementy strachu, ale również stworzyć uczucie niepewności, sprawić, by historie były mniej prostoliniowe lub wypowiedzieć się na poszczególne tematy. Wszystko to jest szczególnie widoczne na stronach książek fantasy, w których autorzy umiejscawiają bohaterów w nadprzyrodzonych - w porównaniu do prawdziwego życia - sytuacjach. Jednakże, w zależności od książki czy nawet podgatunku, użycie i efekt mogą się znacznie różnić. Z jednej strony, J. R. R. Tolkien, komu wiele ludzi przypisuje współczesne fantasy, używa horroru głównie do podniesienia stawki i by dać czytelnikowi do myślenia, że świat jest o wiele bardziej mroczny niż się wydaje. Z drugiej strony, Andrzej Sapkowski, autor sagi Wiedźmin, nie próbuje sprawiać, że horror będzie mniej straszny niż powinien być. Jego dzieła są pełne brutalnych opisów, które są zakorzenione w świecie, który stworzył. Pomimo, że obydwu autorów używa horroru różnie, jest trochę aspektów, które są podobne, na przykład celowe użycie obrzydliwych opisów, które mają dać właśnie taki efekt. Można stwierdzić, że horror wpływa na odbiór książek i nawet pozwala czytelnikom lepiej się w nie zanurzyć.
