An Analysis of the Translation of Selected Songs in the Polish Dubbed Version of the American Musical Film Wicked

dc.abstract.en	The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to analyze the translation techniques applied by the translator and to evaluate the semantic accuracy and naturalness of the translation of five selected songs from the musical film Wicked. The analysis is based on the Polish dubbed version in comparison to the original English lyrics. Song translation involves challenges that extend beyond purely linguistic ones, requiring the consideration of such aspects as singability, rhyme, and rhythm. This type of translation is particularly demanding when songs function simultaneously in the contexts of an audiovisual text and a musical. The thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter introduces the theoretical framework of translation. It presents various definitions of translation and discusses audiovisual translation, with a particular focus on dubbing. The second chapter is devoted to song as a text type. It defines the term song, presents a typology of songs in musicals, and discusses the specifics of song translation. Special attention is given to Low’s Pentathlon Principle (2005) and Newmark’s (1988) translation techniques. The third chapter constitutes the practical part of the thesis. It includes a description of the analyzed corpus, the employed methodology, and a detailed analysis of the translation. At the end of the thesis, conclusions are presented to summarize the key insights drawn from the analysis.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest analiza technik tłumaczeniowych zastosowanych przez tłumacza oraz ocena dokładności semantycznej i naturalności przekładu pięciu wybranych piosenek z musicalu filmowego „Wicked”. Analiza została opracowana na podstawie polskiej wersji dubbingowej w odniesieniu do oryginalnych tekstów w języku angielskim. Tłumaczenie piosenek to złożone zadanie, które wykracza poza kwestie językowe i wymaga uwzględnienia również takich aspektów jak śpiewalność, rymy czy rytm. Przekład tego typu jest szczególnie utrudniony, gdy piosenki funkcjonują jednocześnie w kontekście audiowizualnym i musicalowym. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Rozdział pierwszy zawiera teoretyczne podstawy tłumaczenia. Przedstawiono w nim różne definicje tłumaczenia oraz omówiono tłumaczenie audiowizualne, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem dubbingu. Rozdział drugi dotyczy piosenki jako typu tekstu. Zdefiniowano w nim, czym jest piosenka, zaprezentowano typologię piosenek musicalowych, a także omówiono specyfikę ich tłumaczenia. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono Zasadzie Pięcioboju Lowa (2005) oraz technikom tłumaczeniowym Newmarka (1988). Rozdział trzeci stanowi część praktyczną pracy. Zawiera opis analizowanego korpusu, zastosowaną metodologię oraz szczegółową analizę przekładu. Na końcu pracy przedstawiono wnioski podsumowujące kluczowe spostrzeżenia z przeprowadzonej analizy.
