The Analysis of Fantastic Creature Names in the Polish Translation of the Book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J Rowling

dc.abstract.en	The aim of this work is to analyse the translation of the 101 fantastic creature names featured in the Polish translation of the book Fantastic Creatures and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling, which consist of neologisms and already existing fantastic creatures names known in many or only specific cultures. The theoretical part of the work presents the fundamental concepts of translation theory and overviews translation strategies and techniques on the basis of the taxonomies made by, among others, Peter Newmark and Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet. Next, the characteristics of literary translation are presented, with emphasis on fantasy literature and the concept of the foreign related to it. Further on, the author explores the issue of neologisms in terms of their classification, functions in literature, and translation. Then, the topic of the translation of culture is outlined, especially in terms of translating culture-bound items in fantasy literature. The practical part of the thesis consists of the analysis of first, the neologisms, and then the existing fantastic creature names, with the focus on the implemented translation techniques and the attitude of the translators towards the reader and the intentions of the author. The findings indicate the variety of creative translation procedures made by the translators in order to adapt the text for the Polish culture, while having in mind the intentions of the author about upholding the feeling of the unknown of the reader.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza przekładu 101 nazw istot fantastycznych zawartych w polskim tłumaczeniu książki „Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” autorstwa J.K. Rowling, na które składają się neologizmy jak i już istniejące nazwy istot fantastycznych znanych w wielu lub w poszczególnych kulturach. W części teoretycznej pracy przestawiono podstawowe pojęcia dotyczące teorii przekładu i omówiono strategie oraz techniki tłumaczeniowe oparte na podziałach uczonych, między innymi Petera Newmarka oraz Jean-Paula Vinaya i Jeana Darbelneta. Następnie przedstawiona została charakterystyka przekładu literackiego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem literatury fantastycznej i konceptem obcości, który jest w niej zawarty. Omówiono również zagadnienie neologizmu – jego podział, funkcje w literaturze oraz przekład. Następnie rozwinięty został temat przekładu kultury, z naciskiem na techniki tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych w fantastyce. Część praktyczna pracy opiera się na analizie przekładu kolejno neologizmów, a następnie istniejących już nazw istot fantastycznych pod względem zastosowanych technik tłumaczeniowych, jak i stosunku tłumaczy do czytelnika oraz intencji autorki. Wnioski płynące z analizy pokazują zróżnicowanie kreatywnych zabiegów translatorskich przeprowadzonych przez tłumaczy w celu zaadaptowania tekstu do polskiej kultury, przy jednoczesnej spójności z intencjami autorki dotyczącymi utrzymania w czytelniku poczucia obcości.
