Stanowiska paleontologiczne z wyjątkowym stanem zachowania kręgowców - procesy depozycyjne i tafonomiczne

The thesis presents the Messel Oil Shale Pit as one of the most important Konservat-Lagerstätten worldwide, renowned for its exceptional preservation of vertebrates. It discusses the geological history of the region, shaped by Alpine orogeny and rift-related volcanism that occurred in Germany around 50 million years ago. The work explains the origin and characteristics of the maar lake—its formation through a phreatomagmatic explosion, subsequent filling with water, and development of meromixis caused by its considerable depth. Stable water stratification, long-term anoxia in bottom waters and extremely slow sedimentation created conditions highly favourable for fossilisation. The thesis also outlines the industrial history of Messel, where oil shale was exploited for more than a century, leading to the accidental discovery of the first fossils. It further presents the scientific history of the site—from the earliest descriptions in the late 19th century to extensive rescue excavations during the 20th century. A significant chapter concerns the conflict of the 1970s–1980s, when the former mine was planned to be converted into a landfill. Only a large-scale campaign led by scientists, museums and the local community ultimately prevented this and resulted in the site's inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. The study also examines the climate of the early and middle Eocene, including the global warming events of the PETM and EECO, which shaped the environment of the lake and its surroundings. It characterises the remarkable taxonomic diversity of Messel, comprising more than 1400 taxa of plants, invertebrates and vertebrates, including exceptionally abundant bats and birds, as well as extraordinary examples of preserved stomach contents, melanosomes, soft tissues and embryos. The taphonomic analysis covers the processes from the moment of death to mineralisation. The causes of vertebrate mortality were diverse and individual rather than catastrophic; some deaths may have resulted from cyanotoxin poisoning or accidental drowning. The anoxic lake bottom prevented bioturbation and scavenger activity, while the high hydrostatic pressure caused by the lake's depth inhibited flotation of carcasses. The study highlights the importance of saponification of fatty tissues and the role of microorganisms in initiating and driving mineralisation. It describes the processes of phosphatization, carbonation and pyritization, as well as the influence of clay minerals on the stabilisation of organic matter. The results demonstrate that the exceptional preservation of Messel fossils is the outcome of the combined action of geological, chemical and biological factors. The site thus represents a key research model for taphonomists, palaeontologists and palaeoclimatologists. The study also emphasises the necessity of protecting geological heritage sites.
