Analiza transakcji kryptowalutowych. Studium grupy Lazarus

This paper analyses cryptocurrency transactions from the perspective of computer forensics, with particular focus on the activities of the Lazarus Group. Its aim was to ascertain whether publicly available analytical tools, blockchain explorers and OSINT sources enable the effective tracing of at least some of the operations carried out by an entity using anonymisation techniques, such as address diversification, cross-chain transfers and mixers. The starting point was the assumption that, despite the high level of complexity of cryptocurrency flows, publicly available data can still provide valuable investigative information. The theoretical section of the thesis discusses the fundamentals of digital forensics, blockchain architecture, transaction mechanisms and the main challenges associated with analysing transaction flows in the cryptocurrency environment. Particular attention is paid to techniques that make it difficult to identify perpetrators, such as cross-chain bridges, mixing services and decentralised finance. The research methodology was then presented, covering on-chain and off-chain data collection, graph analysis, information correlation and the evaluation of tools useful in forensic analysis. The empirical section was based on a case study of the Lazarus group and an analysis of the attack on the Ronin bridge. It was demonstrated that on-chain data reveals recurring transaction patterns characteristic of criminal activity, and that combining this with off-chain information enhances the quality of the analysis, although it does not always lead to the unambiguous identification of entities. The tools used also made it possible to trace some of the fund flows despite the use of a mixer and other obfuscation mechanisms. The conclusion of this study is that publicly available analytical tools have real value in the investigation of cryptocurrency transactions, but their effectiveness is limited and depends on the quality of the data, the type of anonymisation techniques used, and the researcher’s skills. The study also demonstrates that blockchain analysis requires not only technical knowledge, but also interpretative caution and the consistent integration of multiple sources of information.
