Upamiętniania zmarłych dzieci w Polsce i Litwie XVI w. (do 1580 r.) – geneza, funkcje i konteksty kulturowe

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the forms and cultural functions of commemorating deceased children in Renaissance Poland and Lithuania. The study focuses on the earliest manifestations of such practices. The chronological boundary is set in the 1580s, a decade that witnessed significant cultural, customary, and religious changes, related, among other things, to the reception of the resolutions of the Council of Trent (1545–1563), which also influenced children’s funerary culture. The principal source base consists of funerary memorials, including tomb monuments and children’s or family epitaphs, analyzed both in terms of inscriptions and their accompanying effigies. A second group of sources comprises the so-called literary epitaphs. The practices of commemorating deceased children are examined in the context of the social and religious status of the child in Old Polish society, with particular emphasis on the nobility. The characteristics of these commemorations take into account gender and social patterns as well as eschatological beliefs connected with the Catholic concepts of childhood innocence, the communion of saints, and children’s intercession. These phenomena are analyzed in the context of the emerging eschatological doctrines of Reformation denominations during the period under study. The dissertation discusses both the origins of motifs, topoi, and forms of commemoration, and their functions within the family, society, and noble and religious communities. The issues are presented in the broader context of the confessional, social, and cultural diversity of the Jagiellonian monarchy. Foreign influences and analogies, particularly the possible impact of Italian, German, and Central European patterns, were also taken into consideration. The analyzed issues may contribute to a better understanding of the history of childhood as well as the spirituality and customs of early modern Polish society. They may also serve as a complement to general studies on funerary culture in this period.
Analizowane praktyki komemoracji zmarłych dzieci rozpatrzone zostały w kontekście statusu społecznego i religijnego dziecka w społeczeństwie staropolskim, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem stanu szlacheckiego.
