An Analysis of the Translation of Vulgarisms in Todd Phillips’ Film “The Hangover”: A Comparative Study of the English, Polish, and German Versions

dc.abstract.en	The aim of this thesis is to analyse the challenges of translating vulgar and offensive language in the film The Hangover (dir. Todd Phillips, 2009) by comparing the original English version with its Polish and German subtitle translations. The study focuses on how translators render linguistically and culturally charged elements that carry strong emotional and pragmatic value in the context of audiovisual translation, which is subject to both technical constraints and cultural norms. The analysis is based on the classification of translation techniques proposed by Garcarz (2007), which serves as a framework for the systematic description of the strategies applied in the examined translations. The thesis also takes into account the social and cultural contexts of the target languages, as well as the specific characteristics of audiovisual translation, including its functions, constraints, and audience expectations. The discussed issues include, among others, the translation of taboo language, cultural adaptation, and the role of the translator as an intercultural mediator. The study follows a mixed-method approach (qualitative and quantitative) and aims to highlight the complexity of translating emotionally and culturally marked elements in the media space.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza problematyki przekładu języka wulgarnego i obraźliwego w filmie Kac Vegas (reż. Todd Phillips, 2009) na przykładzie wersji angielskiej oraz jej polskich i niemieckich odpowiedników w postaci napisów. Przedmiotem badań jest sposób, w jaki tłumacze przekładają elementy językowe o silnym nacechowaniu kulturowym, emocjonalnym i pragmatycznym w kontekście tłumaczenia audiowizualnego, które podlega zarówno ograniczeniom technicznym, jak i normom kulturowym. Analiza opiera się na klasyfikacji technik tłumaczeniowych zaproponowanej przez Garcarza (2007), stanowiącej punkt wyjścia do systematycznego opisu strategii zastosowanych w badanych przekładach. Praca uwzględnia również kontekst społeczny i kulturowy języków docelowych oraz specyfikę przekładu audiowizualnego, w tym jego funkcje, ograniczenia oraz wymagania odbiorców. Poruszane zagadnienia obejmują m.in. problematykę języka tabu, adaptacji kulturowej oraz roli tłumacza jako mediatora międzykulturowego. Badanie ma charakter mieszany (jakościowo-ilościowy) i ma na celu ukazanie złożoności procesu tłumaczenia elementów nacechowanych emocjonalnie i kulturowo w przestrzeni medialnej.
