„Poganka” premodernistyczna? Analiza wybranych motywów powieści Narcyzy Żmichowskiej

dc.abstract.enThe subject of this master’s thesis is an analysis of Narcyza Żmichowska’s novel 'Poganka' in the context of its affiliation with the Romantic era and the elements that transcend its boundaries. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that Żmichowska’s work exhibits features of premodernism. The first part of the thesis discusses the notion of 'nineteenth-century-ness', emphasizing the conventional nature of literary periods and their mutual permeability. It then examines the relationship between Romanticism and Modernism, arguing that Modernism drew significantly on Romantic traditions. The subsequent chapters explore selected motifs in 'Poganka', including the figure of the femme fatale, the relationship between art and reality, Orientalism, decadence, and the symbolism of Satan. The analysis considers both the Romantic connotations of these motifs and their premodernist reinterpretations. The juxtaposition of Romantic topoi with modernist intuitions enables 'Poganka' to be read as a liminal text—firmly rooted in the conventions of its time, yet simultaneously reaching beyond them.
dc.abstract.plPrzedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza powieści „Poganka Narcyzy Żmichowskiej w kontekście jej przynależności do epoki romantyzmu oraz elementów wykraczających poza jej ramy. Celem opracowania było ukazanie, że utwór Żmichowskiej przejawia w sobie cechy premodernizmu. W pierwszej części pracy omówiono kwestie tzw. dziewiętnastowieczności, podkreślając umowność granic epok literackich oraz ich wzajemne przenikanie się. Następnie przeanalizowano relację między romantyzmem a modernizmem, wykazując, iż modernizm w znacznej mierze czerpał z tradycji romantycznej. W dalszej części opracowania omówiono wybrane motywy „Poganki, tj.: figura famme fatale, relacja między sztuką a rzeczywistością, orientalizm, dekadentyzm oraz symbolika szatana. Badanie uwzględniało zarówno romantyczne konotacje owych motywów, jak i ich premodernistyczne przekształcenia. Zestawienie romantycznych toposów z modernistycznymi intuicjami pozwala odczytać „Pogankę jako tekst graniczny – silnie osadzony w konwencjach epoki, lecz jednocześnie je przekraczający.
