Macierzyństwo w spektrum autyzmu – analiza doświadczeń matek w spektrum autyzmu

dc.abstract.enThis study presents an analysis of the maternal experiences of women who have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder or identify as being on the autism spectrum and are raising a child or children on the autism spectrum. The main aim of the study was to explore their everyday challenges related to motherhood and their needs. The qualitative study involved 10 women aged between 28 and 52 years. A reflexive thematic analysis was applied, on the basis of which five overarching themes were identified. The first theme, “The Journey to Oneself”, concerned changes in the participants’ identities related to motherhood, which proved to be a turning point initiating the process of rediscovering themselves. The second theme, “There Was Always Something Different About Me”, concerned the psychological costs borne by the mothers due to a lack of understanding from others. The women often used masking strategies to meet cultural expectations. The next theme, “Being a Mother on the Autism Spectrum”, concerned parenting challenges. The women struggled with sensory overload, limited resources, and the burden of planning everyday life while taking their child’s needs into account. The theme “A Community of Difficulties and Resources” was devoted to the mother–child relationship. It presented the ways in which the participants perceived their children and the significance they attached to building a bond with them. The topic of the child as a reflection of the mother’s characteristics or of a unique, deep bond based on understanding without words emerged repeatedly. This was accompanied by a desire to facilitate the child’s everyday functioning so that they would not share the mothers’ experiences. The final theme, “Confrontation with the System”, concerned the evaluation of support received from the social environment. The findings indicate an urgent need for changes in the support system, both with regard to the child and to the family system as a whole.
dc.abstract.plNiniejsza praca stanowi analizę doświadczeń macierzyńskich kobiet, które posiadają diagnozę spektrum autyzmu lub identyfikują się jako osoby w spektrum autyzmu oraz wychowują dziecko lub dzieci w spektrum autyzmu. Głównym celem badania było poznanie ich codziennych wyzwań związanych z macierzyństwem i potrzeb. W badaniu jakościowym uczestniczyło 10 kobiet w wieku od 28 do 52 lat. Zastosowano metodę refleksyjnej analizy tematycznej, na podstawie której wyodrębniono pięć tematów nadrzędnych. Pierwszy z nich ,,Droga do siebie” dotyczył zmian w zakresie tożsamości uczestniczek, związanych z macierzyństwem, które okazało się punktem zwrotnym inicjującym proces poznawania siebie na nowo. Drugi temat ,,Zawsze było we mnie coś innego” dotyczył kosztów psychicznych ponoszonych przez matki w związku z brakiem zrozumienia ze strony innych osób. Kobiety często stosowały strategię maskowania, by sprostać wzorcom kulturowym. Następny temat ,,Bycie matką w spektrum autyzm” dotyczył wyzwań rodzicielskich. Kobiety mierzyły się z przeciążeniem sensorycznym, deficytem zasobów oraz obciążeniem koniecznością planowania życia codziennego, z uwzględnieniem potrzeb dziecka. Temat ,,Wspólnota trudności i zasobów” został poświęcony relacji matka-dziecko. Przedstawiono sposoby postrzegania dzieci przez uczestniczki oraz znaczenie, jakie nadają one budowaniu więzi z potomstwem. Niejednokrotnie wyłaniał się temat dziecka jako odzwierciedlenia cech matki czy szczególnej, głębokiej więzi opartej na zrozumieniu bez słów. Towarzyszyła mu potrzeba ułatwienia codziennego funkcjonowania dziecku tak, by nie podzieliło doświadczeń matek. Ostatni temat ,,Konfrontacja z systemem” dotyczył oceny wsparcia otrzymywanego ze strony otoczenia. Wnioski wskazują na pilną potrzebę zmian w systemie wsparcia, zarówno w odniesieniu do dziecka, jak całego systemu rodzinnego.
