The influence of Pan-Africanism on the formation of mechanisms of international cooperation in post-colonial Africa

This study examines the impact of Pan-African philosophy as a shared movement in Africa in the early 20th century and through to the 21st century. During this time, colonial oppression and suppression resulted in Pan-African solidarity. The majority of the African populace in most regions faced numerous grievances, emancipation was paramount of all the grievances. Collecting evidence from academic journals, books, and articles, this study demonstrates that Pan-Africanism achieved its set goal of emancipation and it is inclusive of democracy. It argues for effectiveness, relevancy and current representation of Pan-African ideology within the political world. Questions arise, particularly around African institutions concerning the failures of most regions in Africa to develop despite having good structural set ups founded on Pan-African thought. The study findings show that the African Union (AU) unlike its predecessor the Organization of African Union (OAU), has been able to foster a certain level of economic integration through the formation of regional economic communities which have engendered the slight growth. Democracy plays a very crucial role in colonial, and post-colonial Africa. The excuses of unaccountability of leaders’ failing to incorporate democratic values across a wider spectrum of differences ranging from culture, ethnicities to languages.
