Urbanistyka Seulu okresu wczesnego Joseon

The aim of this paper was to present the urban structure of Seoul in the early Joseon state which dates back to period 1392–1592. Seoul, founded in 1394 by King Taejo, served as the capital to this day. The choice of location and city planning were heavily influenced by both climatic and topographic factors, as well as the principles of geomancy (fēng shuǐ). The first chapter of this paper focuses on the description of the geographical and natural conditions and the prehistoric origins of the city. Moreover, it explains the concepts of urban planning and geomancy. The second chapter describes Seoul in terms of geomancy and presents key buildings and places, such as palaces, fortifications, government buildings, shrines and marketplaces, which were built in the period indicated above, playing an important role in the lives of the city dwellers. The last chapter presents the destruction of Seoul as a result of the Japanese and Manchu invasions on the Korean Peninsula at the end of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century, as well as the process of restoring the capital, with particular emphasis on changes taking place in the urban development.
