Negatively-charged -less adjectives in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and their Polish and French equivalents. Explorations in human and machine translation

dc.abstract.en	Negation constitutes an important linguistic phenomenon that may be expressed in English through a variety of means, including affixal negation. Among the productive markers of this type is the suffix -less, which appears repeatedly in Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” and serves as the central focus of the present thesis. The study explores the ways in which adjectives ending in -less are rendered in Polish and French, with particular attention devoted to both human-made translations and equivalents generated by MT systems. The thesis combines a theoretical discussion of negation, morphology and MT with an analysis of selected literary examples in order to examine how meanings of absence or deprivation are conveyed across the examined languages. Particular attention is paid not only to semantic equivalence, but also to broader issues of stylistic nuance, contextual interpretation and the challenges posed by literary language. The conducted research contributes to the ongoing discussion surrounding the role of MT in contemporary translation practices, particularly in the context of literary texts. While recent developments have significantly improved the capabilities of MT systems, questions remain as to whether such technologies are capable of adequately replacing human translators in domains requiring interpretative sensitivity, stylistic awareness and cultural competence. The present thesis seeks to engage with this debate through the analysis of a literary case study.
dc.abstract.pl	Negacja stanowi istotne zjawisko językowe, które w języku angielskim można wyrażać na wiele sposobów, w tym poprzez negację afiksalną. Jednym z produktywnych znaczników tego typu jest przyrostek -less, który pojawia się wielokrotnie w powieści Josepha Conrada „Jądro ciemności”. W niniejszej pracy badane są sposoby oddania negatywnie nacechowanych przymiotników zakończonych na -less w językach polskim i francuskim, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zarówno tłumaczeń wykonanych przez ludzi, jak i ekwiwalentów generowanych przez systemy tłumaczenia maszynowego. Praca łączy teoretyczną dyskusję na temat negacji, morfologii i tłumaczenia maszynowego z analizą wybranych przykładów literackich w celu zbadania, w jaki sposób wyraża się absencję w językach angielskim, polskim oraz francuskim. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono nie tylko poprawności semantycznej, ale także szerszym kwestiom niuansów stylistycznych, interpretacji kontekstowej oraz wyzwaniom stawianym przez język literacki. Przeprowadzone badanie wnosi wkład w toczącą się dyskusję na temat roli tłumaczenia maszynowego we współczesnych praktykach tłumaczeniowych, szczególnie w kontekście tekstów literackich. Chociaż ostatnie osiągnięcia znacznie poprawiły możliwości systemów tłumaczenia maszynowego, pozostaje pytanie, czy technologie te są w stanie odpowiednio zastąpić tłumaczy ludzkich w dziedzinach wymagających wrażliwości interpretacyjnej, świadomości stylistycznej i kompetencji kulturowych. Niniejsza praca ma na celu włączenie się w tę debatę poprzez analizę literackiego studium przypadku.
