Regulacja emocji a samoocena i satysfakcja z życia u kobiet i mężczyzn

Emotion regulation, self-esteem and life satisfaction in women and men ABSTRACT Contemporary psychology increasingly addresses the importance of emotion regulation as one of the key mechanisms determining an individual's adaptive functioning in everyday life. The ability to consciously manage emotions allows individuals to cope better with stress, improves interpersonal relationships, and affects overall mental well-being. The regulatory strategies used by individuals are closely related to self-esteem, which in turn is an important psychological resource that influences self-perception, motivation, and mental resilience. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between emotion regulation strategies and the level of self-esteem and life satisfaction, with particular emphasis on gender differences. The theoretical part of the study characterises the concept of emotion regulation and discusses its basic strategies, such as cognitive reinterpretation, emotion suppression, avoidance and acceptance. Next, the definition and determinants of self-esteem, treated as a relatively stable assessment of one's own worth, were presented. Attention was drawn to the interrelationships between self-esteem and emotional functioning, indicating that people with high self-esteem are more likely to use strategies considered adaptive. Subsequent subsections discuss the relationship between gender and the emotion regulation strategies used and the level of self-esteem, citing research findings suggesting that women more often experience difficulties in regulating emotions and report lower self-esteem than men. For the purposes of this study, we conducted our own research, the main objective of which was to examine the relationships between emotion regulation strategies and self-esteem levels, as well as to analyse possible gender differences in this regard. Research questions and hypotheses were formulated, predicting, among other things, that higher self-esteem is associated with the use 4 of adaptive strategies, while maladaptive strategies (e.g., suppression of emotions) correlate with lower self-esteem. In addition, it was predicted that women have lower self-esteem and use maladaptive strategies more often than men. Eighty people (44 women and 35 men) participated in the study. Emotion regulation strategies were measured using the HFERST questionnaire. Difficulties in emotion regulation were examined using the Polish adaptation of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS-36). The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) was used to measure life satisfaction. Self-esteem was examined using the Polish adaptation of Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (SES). The study was conducted using a questionnaire method. The author's own research conducted for the purposes of this study leads to the conclusion that there is a positive relationship between emotion regulation and self-esteem. The use of adaptive strategies that are more beneficial to the individual translated into higher self-esteem, which was associated, among other things, with a higher belief in the effectiveness of one's actions. The discussion of the results referred to existing theoretical and empirical findings, pointing to the consistency of the results obtained with previous studies. The practical implications of the work were also indicated. The conclusion discussed the limitations of the study and indicated directions for further analysis in this area. Key words: emotion regulation, emotion regulation strategies, self-esteem, life satisfaction, adaptive strategies, maladaptive strategies, gender differences, emotional functioning, psychological resilience
W badaniu uczestniczyło 80 osób (44 kobiety i 35 mężczyzn). Strategie regulacji emocji były mierzone kwestionariuszem HFERST.
