Gendered Language and Humour: Analysing Politeness Strategies Among Female Characters in Friends

dc.abstract.en	The present study investigates the use of politeness strategies employed by female characters in the TV series Friends and examines how they are used to produce humour and whether they align with or challenge the existing theories on “women’s language”. Humorous utterances were selected based on the presence of laugh tracks and were analysed through the lens of Brown & Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory. It has been revealed that women use politeness strategies to cultivate social relationships and express solidarity thus confirming the idea of a nurturing, caring and communicatively cooperative woman. However, as they do so mostly through teasing and playful aggression, also in the direction of male characters, the theory of women as being powerless and lacking authority has not been confirmed. Several limitations as to the nature of data were identified such as the limited set of data, subjectivity in categorisation and lack of possibility to compare women’s and men’s language. Additionally, the scripted nature of data and close relationship between the female characters, might have hindered the adequacy of the data in terms of its reference to “women’s language” theories, which were developed on real-life studies. Nevertheless, the study contributes to the understanding of gendered communication and humour in popular culture and highlights the intersection of linguistic theories and media representation.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsze badanie analizuje zastosowanie strategii grzecznościowych przez żeńskie postacie w serialu Przyjeciele oraz bada, w jaki sposób są one wykorzystywane do celów humorystycznych, a także czy pozostają zgodne z teoriami dotyczącymi „języka kobiet” czy też im przeczą. Wypowiedzi humorystyczne zostały zidentyfikowane na podstawie obecności ścieżki dźwiękowej śmiechu i następnie przeanalizowane na podstawie teorii grzeczności autorstwa Brown i Levinsona (1987). Analiza wykazała, że kobiety stosują strategie grzecznościowe w celu budowania relacji społecznych i wyrażania solidarności, co potwierdza stereotyp kobiety jako opiekuńczej, troskliwej i komunikatywnej. Jednakże, ponieważ działania te przejawiają się głównie poprzez droczenie się i pasywną agresję, również wobec postaci męskich, teza o kobiecej bezsilności i braku autorytetu nie została potwierdzona. Zidentyfikowano szereg ograniczeń związanych z charakterem materiału badawczego, takich jak ograniczona ilość danych, subiektywność w ich kategoryzacji oraz brak możliwości porównania języka kobiet i mężczyzn. Dodatkowo, bliskie relacje pomiędzy bohaterkami serialu oraz fakt, iż dialogi są uprzednio przygotowane mogą podważać adekwatność materiału w odniesieniu do teorii „języka kobiet” opartych na badaniach rzeczywistych interakcji. Niemniej jednak, niniejsze badanie wnosi wkład w rozumienie jak płeć wpływa na komunikację i humor, podkreślając tym samym związek między teoriami językoznawczymi a ich reprezentacją w mediach.
