Repetition and variability in retranslation: four of the Polish translations of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four

dc.abstract.en	This thesis presents a comparative analysis of George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty-Four” and four selected Polish translations of the novel: by Juliusz Mieroszewski (1953), Tomasz Mirkowicz (1988), Dorota Konowrocka-Sawa (2021), and Julia Fiedorczuk (2023). The study focuses on selected neologisms in the novel and the “Newspeak Appendix”, which describes and characterizes the fictional language of “Newspeak” which is one of the elements of the story’s world. Additionally, the analysis examines selected codified principles of Newspeak outlined in the appendix. The thesis is structured into two chapters. The first chapter introduces the concept of multiplicity of translations, known in Western translation theory as ‘retranslation’ and in Polish translation studies as ‘seria translatorska’, i.e. ‘translation series’. Particular attention is given to Polish theorizations, including concepts such as the ‘exhaustibility of translation series’, the ‘shared word’ in translation series, translation as a ‘collective property’, or, conversely, the reuse of predecessors’ equivalents viewed as plagiarism. The second chapter identifies similarities and differences among the translations of selected neologisms and Newspeak principles, and contains their qualitative and quantitative analyses.
dc.abstract.pl	W niniejszej pracy dokonano analizy porównawczej „Roku 1984” George’a Orwella oraz czterech wybranych polskich tłumaczeń dzieła, autorstwa Juliusza Mieroszewskiego (tłum. z 1953 r.), Tomasza Mirkowicza (tłum. z 1988 r.), Doroty Konowrockiej-Sawy (tłum. z 2021 r.) oraz Julii Fiedorczuk (tłum. z 2023 r.). Przedmiot analizy stanowiły wybrane neologizmy pojawiające się w powieści oraz w dodatku do powieści, opisującym i charakteryzującym fikcyjny język, stanowiący element świata przedstawionego – „nowomowę”. Analizie poddano również wybrane skodyfikowane zasady „nowomowy” występujące we wspomnianym dodatku. Praca została podzielona na dwa rozdziały. W rozdziale pierwszym przybliżona została koncepcja wielości tłumaczeń, funkcjonująca w zachodniej teorii przekładu jako „retranslacja” oraz w polskiej teorii przekładu jako „seria translatorska”. Uwagę zwrócono w tym rozdziale szczególnie na polską teorię przekładu wraz z jej koncepcjami „wyczerpywalności serii”, „słowa wspólnego” w serii translatorskiej, przekładu jako „własności wspólnej”, lub przeciwnie, wykorzystywania tłumaczeń poprzedników rozumianego jako plagiat. W drugim rozdziale pracy prześledzono podobieństwa i różnice występujące między tłumaczeniami wybranych neologizmów i zasad nowomowy oraz dokonano ich analizy jakościowej oraz ilościowej.
