Interakcje z wybranymi afrykańskimi przywódcami w relacjach podróżniczych H. M. Stanleya

dc.abstract.enThe thesis focuses on examining the goals and motivations of African leaders who chose to collaborate with the explorer and journalist Henry Morton Stanley. The research timeframe covers the years 1872–1877, and its source material is Stanley's books “How I Found Livingstone and Through the Dark Continent. A comparative analysis is employed. The research assumes that the Africans who collaborated with Stanley sought to achieve their own goals through his involvement. Based on the political and cultural context of their encounters, as well as descriptions of their behavior and conversations with Africans, the study identifies potential motivations that may have led them to collaborate with the European. These motivations are divided into three categories: military, political, and economic. A key element of the research was the comparison of different versions of events presented in the sources, allowing for the drawing of conclusions regarding the motives behind the decisions and actions of the continent's indigenous inhabitants. The study also took into account the cultural differences and patterns that existed at the time, as they had a significant impact on the development of Stanley's narrative strategy.
dc.abstract.plPraca koncentruje się na badaniu celów i motywacji Afrykanów do podjęcia współpracy z podróżnikiem i dziennikarzem Henrym Mortonem Stanleyem. Ramy czasowe pracy obejmują lata 1872–1877, a podstawę źródłową stanowią książki autorstwa Stanleya How I Found Livingstone oraz Through the Dark Continent. Wykorzystano analizę porównawczą. Poczyniono założenie, że Afrykanie, z którymi podróżnik podjął współpracę, chcieli za jego pośrednictwem doprowadzić do realizacji swych celów. Na podstawie kontekstu politycznego i kulturowego spotkań oraz opisów zachowań i rozmów z Afrykanami sformułowano potencjalne motywacje, które mogły skłonić ich do współpracy z Europejczykiem. Podzielono je na trzy kategorie: militarne, polityczne i ekonomiczne. Kluczowe dla pracy było skonfrontowanie ze sobą różnych wersji wydarzeń przedstawionych w źródłach, co pozwoliło wyciągnąć wnioski dotyczące przyczyn decyzji i działań rdzennych mieszkańców kontynentu. W trakcie badań uwzględniono także kwestie ówczesnych różnic i schematów kulturowych, ponieważ miały one istotny wpływ na kształtowanie strategii narracyjnej Stanleya.
