Post-Editing in Machine and Generative AI Translation: A Comparative Analysis based on Selected Fragments of “The Last Foray in Lithuania: a History of the Nobility in the Years 1811 and 1812”
Post-Editing in Machine and Generative AI Translation: A Comparative Analysis based on Selected Fragments of “The Last Foray in Lithuania: a History of the Nobility in the Years 1811 and 1812”
| dc.abstract.en | The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized the field of translation, particularly through the widespread use of machine translation (MT) systems and the recent emergence of generative AI translation (GAIT) models. This thesis investigates the role of post-editing in AI-assisted translations, with a focus on the comparative analysis of outputs from conventional MT system, Google Translate, and GAIT model, QwenLM. Using a fragment of “The Last Foray in Lithuania: a History of the Nobility in the Years 1811 and 1812” by Adam Mickiewicz as a case study, the research evaluate translation quality in terms of lexical accuracy, grammatical correctness, and contextual fidelity. The first chapter introduces the evolution and types of machine translation, including the role of generative AI, the second chapter explores the concept and practices of post-editing in AI-assisted translation, the third one outlines the research design, tools, and source material, and the fourth presents the comparative analysis and discusses the findings. The study reveals that MT and GAIT require varying degrees of human intervention to ensure literary and historical authenticity, while both of them accelerate translation processes. Through a structured methodology and in-depth analysis, this thesis underscores the important role of post-editing in maintaining translation quality and explores its implications for the future of literary translation in the age of AI. |
