The conception of direct perception: a philosophical and corpus analysis in the context of the 4E approach

dc.abstract.en	The thesis aims to provide a philosophical analysis of the concept of direct perception within the 4E movement, reinforced by various NLP techniques and the use of neural networks. First, I describe James Gibson's notion of directness, which is foundational for ecological psychology. Then, following Zoe Drayson and Paul Snowdon, I distinguish and carefully describe compositional and functional theories of perception. The next part of the thesis involves an analysis in Python: creating a corpus of 8 million scientific publications, reducing its size, and training an artificial neural network (Word2vec) to ascribe vector representations to each paragraph. The subsequent step was employing HDBSCAN—a clustering algorithm—to identify the core context of direct perception. As a result, four different contexts emerged: (1) direct perception in social cognition, (2) direct perception in Buddhism and continental philosophy, (3) direct perception in ecological psychology, and (4) direct perception as an ecological argument against representations. In the discussion, I scrutinize the possibility of providing an inter-theoretical argument for the directness of perception among the outlined theories. That is to say, I examine whether some of these theories can meaningfully, without committing the fallacy of equivocation, criticise or support other approaches to perception. The conclusion is that there are interpretations of direct social perception and ecological psychology which, at least partially, can provide such an argument.
dc.abstract.pl	Celem pracy jest analiza filozoficzna pojęcia percepcji bezpośredniej w ramach nurtu 4E, wspomagana różnymi technikami zaczerpniętymi z NLP oraz sztucznymi sieciami neuronowymi. Najpierw opisuję rozumienie bezpośredniości autorstwa Jamesa Gibsona, które stanowiło jeden z fundamentów psychologii ekologicznej. Następnie, inspirując się pracami Zoe Drayson oraz Paula Snowdona, wprowadzam rozróżnienie teorii percepcji na kompozycyjne i funkcjonalne. Kolejną częścią pracy jest analiza pojęcia percepcji bezpośredniej w Pythonie, polegająca na stworzeniu korpusu 8 milionów artykułów naukowych, redukcji jego rozmiarów oraz wytrenowaniu sztucznych sieci neuronowych (Word2vec), w celu przypisania każdemu akapitowi reprezentacji w postaci wektora liczb. Kolejnym krokiem było przeprowadzenie klastrowania akapitów z pomocą algorytmu HDBSCAN. Pozwoliło to na zidentyfikowanie najistotniejszych kontekstów użycia percepcji bezpośredniej. Rezultatem tego było pojawienie się czterech klastrów: (1) percepcji bezpośredniej w kontekście poznania społecznego (2) percepcji bezpośredniej w buddyzmie i filozofii kontynentalnej, (3) percepcji bezpośredniej w psychologii ekologicznej (4) percepcji bezpośredniej traktowanej jako argument antyreprezentacjonistyczny. W sekcji Dyskusja omawiam możliwości przedstawienia międzyteoretycznych argumentów na rzecz bezpośredniości percepcji w obrębie zarysowanych teorii. Dokładniej, badam, czy na gruncie niektórych z tych teorii można przedstawić argumenty krytykujące lub wspierające pozostałe teorie percepcji, nie ryzykując błędu ekwiwokacji. Okazuje się, że istnieją takie interpretacje percepcji bezpośredniej, które pozwalają na sformułowanie podobnych argumentów.
