Keeping the Classics Up with the Time(s): The Autobiography of Jane Eyre as a Transmedia Adaptation

dc.abstract.en	Since the publication of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012-2013) on YouTube, the genre of the web series has developed significantly. These adaptations are contemporary retellings of classical literature. Their main purpose is to convert a monomedia novel into transmedia storytelling. Since the genre is still relatively new, many of its aspects ought to be analyzed. This paper aims to juxtapose The Autobiography of Jane Eyre, a transmedia adaptation of Brontë's Jane Eyre (1847) with various aspects of time(s). It discusses how AoJE presents the story to the 21st-century audience by using multiple social media platforms and how viewers' interaction with the material affects the outcome. Additionally, the adaptation is analyzed in the context of medium specificity, as the vlog format and echoes of popular culture contribute to modernizing the narrative. The research was mainly based on the works of Linda Hutcheon and Henry Jenkins, as it refers to principal characteristics of adaptation in contemporary times as well as the concept of participatory culture and prosumers. The key findings demonstrate that AoJE depends on real-time aspects to a great extent. It may prompt engagement among the viewers but also result in misunderstandings of the content. Nevertheless, it can be argued that the adaptation contributes to the timelessness of classics.
dc.abstract.pl	Od momentu publikacji ,,Pamiętników Lizzie Bennet (2012-2013) na YouTube, gatunek seriali internetowych znacząco się rozwija. Są to klasyki literatury w nowej odsłonie. Ich głównym celem jest przekształcenie monomedialnej powieści w transmedialną opowieść. Z racji, iż gatunek jest relatywnie nowym zjawiskiem, wciąż pozostaje w nim wiele niezbadanych zagadnień. Niniejsza praca ma na celu porównanie ,,Autobiografii Jane Eyre, transmedialnej adaptacji ,,Dziwnych losów Jane Eyre (Charlotte Brontë) z różnymi aspektami czasu. Omówiona zostaje metoda rozdzielenia historii na wiele platform społecznościowych oraz sposób, w jaki interakcja widzów z materiałem wpływa na efekt końcowy. Ponadto, opisana jest również charakterystyka medium, z racji, iż format vloga i echa kultury popularnej modernizują narrację w ,,Autobiografii Jane Eyre. Analiza bazuje na pracach Lindy Hutcheon oraz Henry'ego Jenkinsa, nawiązujących do współczesnych cech adaptacji oraz kultury partycypacji i prosumerów. Wnioski sugerują, że transmedialna adaptacja powieści Brontë jest zależna od realnych aspektów czasu, co może skutkować zaangażowaniem ze strony widzów, ale również niezrozumieniem treści. Mimo tego, niniejsza praca wskazuje na to, że adaptacja powieści Brontë przyczynia się do ponadczasowości klasyki literatury.
