Cultural Representations of Obesity in the Victorian Age

This dissertation investigates medical, social, and cultural representations of obesity in England in the 19th century, presenting the historical development of obesity. It explores the causes of obesity and its negative consequences both for today's corpulent Brits and Victorian ones, presenting how Victorian health workers already tried to solve this problem. This study analyses Victorian medical knowledge, social and diet reforms, and methods to prevent and treat corpulence. In addition, it explores the Victorian class system, food culture, physical exercise and sports, beauty standards, social expectations, and attitudes changed gradually toward body weight by comparing men and women. This paper presents visual representations of fatness in Victorian art and media (satirical cartoons, advertisements, and official portraits) and shows differences in depictions of women and men. Also, it analyses the lives and habits of the members of the British royal family by demonstrating environmental, psychological, health, and genetic factors, which led some Hanoverians to be fat. It illustrates how Victorian male weight was associated with integrity, power and wealth, whereas female corpulence was considered a sign of self-discipline problems related to appetite. In addition, it demonstrates the relationship between present and past in how being slim is idealised, although the arguments for what is considered ideal have evolved.
W pracy poddano analizie wiedzę medyczną w XIX wieku, rozwój diet i stosunku do żywienia, a także metody walki z nadwagą.
